My boys play FPS like valorant and overwatch where I play slower more strategic games like dwarf fortress.

I’ve been looking for a game we can all play together sometimes on the understanding that none of us practice outside of that time (they have a lot more time to apply to this stuff then I do, so soon accelerate away from me)

Is DRG a good fit, does anyone think?

Yeah, definitely give it a shot. Also, a skill gap in this game isn’t really a big issue. Playing together for the first few hours so you unlock stuff at the same time might be fun though. Most of the skill in this game isn’t traditional shooter stuff like having better aim, and more about using your tools more efficiently to help out your teammates. I play with random players a lot and don’t mind playing with people less experienced, so I wouldn’t worry too much about keeping to the same amount of time in the game. Fantastic game overall though, definitely recommend it.

I would say that there definitely is a skill gap between greenbeards and greybeards in the game. But the great thing about DRG is that you wont notice it so much on the lower hazard levels. I had around 150 hours headstart in DRG when i played with my teammates during covid and there was a noticable difference in skill level when doing hazard 3-4, but on hazard 2 everyone could follow along and it was somewhat of a challenge for me because low skill players dont kill aliens that efficiently and the amount of aliens scale with the amount of players you are.

Indeed. And yeah, after the first 8 mission opener assignment, everyone is free to pursue their own assignments and just round robin who’s assignment is getting progress next mission. Sometimes it works out so more than one person has the same mission, too.

The game also has “hazard” (difficulty) levels you can set when creating a mission. But the game doesn’t demand a lot of skill/twitch unless you’re on hazard 4/5.

It’s one of the best coop games IMO. You can play it for a bit, leave, then come back without worrying you missed out on content/skills/etc.

I think this is one of the most important parts! DRG has a Season Pass. BUT you don’t have to pay for anything. There is now money to be spend. You just have to play to unlock tings. AND if you don’t get all of the things that are available, they just put it into the game to find. You won’t miss anything from a season, even if you haven’t played it, because everything will be available in the game afterwards. The only difference is, that it is thrown into the pool with other stuff to find. So it’s random.

Bit I think in a time where nearly every Multiplayer Game has a season pass to try to rob you of your money (Diablo 4 even has two passes), this is a really beatiful way to do it.

Haz 2 is plenty hard enough for inexperienced players who don’t have a full set of upgrades on their weapons. But yeah, Haz-4 and 5 is what really makes you think about optimising your builds (if that’s where you find your fun).

So on lower hazard levels the game can be pretty easy/slow which gives you plenty of opportunity to learn the ins and outs or to get a warmup mission in. However haz 3 always felt like a good sweet spot where it has challenges but even if you haven’t played in a week you aren’t gonna get toppled. I also wouldn’t consider DRG a game that you would ever need to “practice” to play other than maybe haz 5? But being able to play haz 5 is more about proper loadout and just knowing what to do.

I play both Valorant and Dwarf Fortress and Deep Rock Galactic was a perfect fit for me, as you can both hit sick M1000 headshots and dash away like you’re playing Jett, but also just dig deep, explore and ROCK AND STONE into the deepest caves of Hoxxes IV.

Very excited for this! Waiting for the weekend to try it for the first time with my friend who introduced me to the game.

For anyone unfamiliar with the game, all of the seasonal content aside from the one cosmetic weapon skin pack is free, including a battle pass with a ton of free cosmetics. There’s also no predatory FOMO stuff, you can still get all the stuff from previous seasons through random drops, and past season mechanics stay in the game as random events during missions. Great game and great community, try it out if you haven’t.

    Definitely!

DRG is one of those games that I find it really hard to explain why it’s so good. They’ve just done all the little things really well and the resulting experience is just fun.

I mostly play co-op with a couple of friends, on a not particularly high difficulty so we can have a good time killing bugs without too much stress.
