Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Ad companies should just cut out the middle man and pay me to watch their ads
73·1 month agoCounter-proposal: you get to opt-out of advertising by signing up to automatically buy all the products they advertise.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is your experience with your work's insurance
2·3 months agoSounds more like Canada to me. None of those things are covered publicly here, although we were making some slow progress on drug and dental coverage when we had a mildly progressive party sharing power.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is there a way to reduce the number of AI generated websites that appear in search results?
2·3 months agoI’ve almost given up on just searching the whole internet for something. I either filter by eye for sites I trust in the results, or add a filter to the query. There are usually a handful of sites I trust on a given topic.
It’s crazy how poorly photos convey the experience.
It sounds basic, but I just keep an eye on new album reviews and give things a quick listen (on Spotify usually) if they have some good reviews.
For things I like I try to buy it on bandcamp so I can put it on my jellyfin server. If it’s hard to find DRM free I 🏴☠️.
Downside is I miss out on non-album releases.
Vista era was when they were working on new driver models, graphics APIs, filesystem, a new shell, etc.
Sure most of them ended up sucking or didn’t ship at all, but at least they were trying to improve the core of the OS.
Since then it’s been 100% driven by marketing and adbusing their users.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the largest object one can buy for the least amount of money?
7·4 months agoI’m sure there’s cheap land for sale, but that one is just a typo in the listing I’m pretty sure.
Situated on a large 82X145 fully fenced lot, giving you ample room and tons of outdoor space for your family.
It’s a regular town lot surrounded by others.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are your most recently visited Wikipedia pages?
2·4 months agoNow I kind of want to have a daily Lemmy thread where we read and discuss a random Wikipedia article as a community.

World News@lemmy.world•Ban on Palestine Action to take effect after legal challenge failsEnglish
211·5 months agoAnother hearing is scheduled for 21 July when Palestine Action will apply for permission for a judicial review to quash the order. In the meantime, and unless the judicial review is successful, membership of, or inviting support for, the group will carry a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison.
So they have a hearing, and presumably legal representation, but they can’t legally have any members at the time of the hearing? What a load of shit.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Do American drug companies come up with their drug's name or jingle first
1·5 months agoThere’s a film that covers how they named Gleemonex:
The first decision has to be vim/emacs.
That’s crazy.
Since GPUs got into the TFLOP range I often think of this old magazine cover:

3·7 months agoThis is what I came here to say. This is a sovereignty issue they could solve with a miniscule portion of their defense budgets.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Those working from say 1970 to 2000, did you notice a change in office tempers as lead poisoning wound down?
4·7 months agoIt’s buckets of people that had those different lead levels, so it adds up to everyone.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you use your turn signal in a turn-only lane? Why or why not?
7·7 months agoI always would. The only time it becomes a bit ambiguous is if there are two turn lanes, e.g. you’re turning left from the second-to-left lane. In that case I’d usually indicate later, maybe when I’ve stopped or the white line is solid, so it’s clear I’m not trying to change lanes.
I’m probably over thinking it.
