Yes, but there’s no ability to search for users yet. So I guess you have to tag them or message them before you can follow them, or maybe if they follow you first
I think if they focus on interop with other platforms, like using hashtags for regional posts, it could work

Joining and leaving events is not implemented yet.
For a community, we already have !fedigrow@lemmy.zip (for growing communities) and !fedibridge@lemmy.dbzer0.com (for growing the Fediverse)
Also if we’re focusing on growing a specific community we should probably also try to let people outside of Lemmy know about it (Reddit/Discord/Twitter…)

Not sure if something similar exists for microblogging platforms. I can’t believe someone hasn’t made a Mastodon app/frontend that does this, or a fork of Misskey/Sharkey with an algorithm built in. Are the microblogging platforms even trying to build features to bring in new users? Lol

“New Comments” is underrated! Active is pretty good too. For my default I use Subscribed+Scaled so I don’t miss anything, but if I’m looking for engagement I use New Comments or Active. The Hot sort kinda sucks on Lemmy lol, it’s too similar to New. But OP is on PieFed, IDK how Hot is there, it uses different math.
I think in a vacuum Mastodon is very good, it works really well. But only with itself. They don’t seem very eager to work with other ActivityPub platforms.
No I agree. The Fediverse needs more algorithm driven frontends for people who want that. The only one I know of is for Lemmy not Mastodon
