The NAACP never changed their name, so I assumed the term just fell out of use, but wasn’t necessarily offensive.

Funny@sh.itjust.works•Chinese robot tries to dance like Michael Jackson
20·5 days agoI’m imagining most robots like this will be goose-stepping instead of dancing, so the inability to dance is probably not a big deal.

A: A sock.

Gabe doesn’t do a lot of interviews and mostly keeps out of the public eye. Elon Musk also had a lot of fans until he started running his mouth too much and revealing who he really is.
Duvets are a pain in the ass and both the duvet and cover need to be washed anyway. Why not just stick with comforters with sheets and save yourself the trouble?
Listening to a group just jamming in any genre is boring. Selecting the best parts and composing them into to a refined piece of music with a lot of deliberate thought behind it goes a long way towards creating something worthy of a listener’s time.

3·26 days agoI’d be curious about stats on downvoting as well. Anecdotally, downvote frequency seems to vary by community. Personally, I don’t downvote for differences of opinion, and instead withhold upvotes, with downvotes reserved for blatantly toxic behavior. The etiquette across Lemmy seems varied, though.

I wouldn’t put it past the US government to pull some shenanigans, and I certainly wouldn’t rule out the possibility that some aspect of it was a lie. That being said, I have yet to see any evidence that it was faked that isn’t simply a misunderstanding of the science.
TIL that glacier ice is considered a type of mono-mineralic rock: https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/glacier-ice-a-type-rock
As I was filing my taxes, I was just thinking about the video someone posted here recently where military weapons were firing and it was racking up huge sums as shots were fired. All the US citizens on Lemmy paying taxes amounts to a few air to air missiles.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•If we did an experiment to measure many peoples' maximum poop velocities, I'm sure we could use the data to design a toilet tall enough to never splash anyone back.

My first thought looking at that is she gonna cut herself on that axe. Get a proper sheath, FFS!

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•If I shared a home with a 36' tall, 2-ton creature, I would be very careful to stay away from its feet while it walked
5·2 months agoMy cat is always trying to trip me. Then again, she looks and acts like one of her parents was an African wildcat straight from the savanna. Even when she’s being purry and cuddly laying in my nook, she keeps trying to lovingly bite my face off and when I play with her, she does backflips several feet into the air trying to catch whatever toy I’m animating for her. Little creature is half wild!

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•It should be "as the duck flies", not "as the crow flies".
3·2 months agoDon’t ducks have specific migratory flyaways, so it’s more akin to commercial airlines in that they fly specific routes seasonally? Other than that, I assume they primarily fly between bodies of water. “As the duck flies” would therefore assume that a duck would even fly the route in question, when in fact, a crow may be more likely to fly it than a duck.

Over 3,000 data centers are planned in the U.S., and I am not imagining they’re being built so everyone can generate slop to their heart’s content. Recent events like OpenAI becoming an official member of the military industrial complex and the F.B.I.’s deal with Flock make me think they’re largely being built as infrastructure for the digital cage.
