Mechwarrior 2: 31st Century Combat was my introduction to the Battletech franchise. That opening cinematic of Timber Wolves versus Summoners blew my 9 year old mind.
That game did a fairly bad job of indicating it was part of a larger franchise. It was obviously a sequel, but the computer my copy of the game came with also came with Descent II, that wasn’t part of some huge franchise. It wasn’t until I was playing in a roleplaying league of Mechwarrior 4: Vengeance in high school that I learned hey, there’s actually a big body of fiction behind this.
