  • This take is riddled with naivety.

Not only will Meta read, train AI on, aggregate and datamine, and correlate this data with your real identity, but when Meta announces that “the easiest way to be on the fediverse is to just use Threads” then all the people who avoided Mastodon because it was “too complicated” to sign up, all the people who are basically already signed up because they scroll Insta all day, will go with Threads instead of spreading the load out.

As smaller instances start to drop off under the load, under the lack of interest as threads grows and they shrink, merely mirroring the traffic of a centralized corporate entity, users start to flock to threads for its reliability and speed.

Then Meta pulls the plug, since “no one really used this ActivityPub thing anyway, it was too technical”.

Threads isn’t about beating “X” (lol X is in a death spiral, it’s only a matter of time), it’s about ensuring the Fediverse never rises up.

See what happened with Google Talk and XMPP.

  • EDIT: oh you said “sploof” so I glanced over it. Seems the term “spoof” (as in to fake) has been telephone’d by stoners over the last 20 years because I’ve never heard “sploof” in my life. Sounds like some Rick & Morty shit.

Original post: Build a spoof, homie.

Take a plastic coke bottle, poke holes in the bottom about 1/8” across, in each of the feet

Stuff that bitch fulla dryer sheets

    Blow your hits through it

Now it smells like you used fabreeze for bong water but at least it’s not blatant

  • Isn’t Hexbear the ex-ChapoTrapHouse subreddit that started their own sub with blackjack and hookers?

I.e. they created (and, importantly, modified) their own Lemmy instance. And, supposedly, they’re working to fix what they broke, so they can rejoin with the larger fediverse without losing their content?

So before we wax paranoid about the intentions of lemmyworld admins, shouldn’t we consider that this might just be a temporary measure to prevent technical issues while they bring their fixes into production?

Let’s just wait until LW admins make their announcement before we pass judgement. I fully agree there is no political reason to defederate from them. I don’t know if their community is problematic but everything I’ve heard would suggest otherwise. And I do not know the timeframe or technical details of their supposed plan to refederate. So again, while I agree with you, I think perhaps it is a bit early for speeches.

  • k8s have a steep learning curve comparatively. With Docker you just install the Docker package and it’s off to the races. With k8s you need to know basically how Docker works, know how the layers it adds on top work, and define everything using YAML config files to get things up and running. The networking is complicated (but flexible), the storage isn’t straightforward (it’s designed to work with large-scale solutions like S3 or Ceph, so setting it up even for local “folder” storage requires more moving parts). Even bootstrapping a new installation requires many steps to install all the pieces you need.

Don’t get me wrong it’s awesome, but if you don’t already know it, it doesn’t have many advantages for small installations over Docker which is very much “run docker-compose on this file you downloaded and the thing you want sets itself up”.

While there are tools like Helm or Portainer to assist you, you still have to understand it to make it work.

  • Let’s put it this way: if you stepped into a teleporter, the last think you’d ever experience is being disassembled. Doesn’t matter if it hurts or whatever. It just goes black. You die. You, YOU, will never see the other side. You won’t be the one to come out; it’s a clone of you.

Even if it is the very same atoms, the very same dendrites and synapses, reassembled perfectly.

Your clone will think it’s you and it will go “oh wow, it DOES work”. It’ll know your mother. It’ll bang your wife. It has your degree in Computer Science or whatever. And it even has all your experiences up to and including the moment the teleporter turned on.

But it’s not you. You blinked out of existence, your experience ended. You ended the self, and a new self was born at the other end, endowed with everything that encapsulated you previously.

    Nah, I’m good.

  • That’s not what quantum entanglement means, but either way, you die when you step into the teleporter. Some clone that thinks it’s you on the other side lives out the rest of your days. There aren’t two ways about this.

If they could make a portal that bent space time so that origin and destination were “next to” each other, I’d consider it.

Anything that has to take me apart and put me back together is just creating a copy of me, my consciousness would not be continuous no matter what illusion we put the clone under.

    So no, fuck teleportation.

  • Your original copy would die. Your life as you know it would end the moment you teleport.

Sure on the other end a replica would come out, presumably with all your memories etc intact, but it would not be you, you would not experience it. It would go on living your life, thinking it was you, everyone around it treating it like it was you, and presumably doing all the same things you would have done.

Except it is not you. Your experience ended at the teleporter. And many fools would never realize this, because the dead aren’t around to tell us.

No you were clear. You are just incorrect. Your “private messages” can be accessed by anyone who works at the site, and are typically scanned for analysis and that data about what you discuss is sold to market researchers.

So they named them direct messages so they couldn’t be accused of false advertisement.

Just because they’re not “public” doesn’t mean they’re “private”.

  • Since the late 90s, school admins have become increasingly “police state light”; multiple vice principals with walkie-talkies, metal detectors, 3 hour after school detention, saturday detention, in-school suspension (you go sit in a room in silence for literally the entire school day), and zero tolerance. Imagine getting punched in the face and THEN being expelled for it. And I’m not even talking about “rough inner-city schools” or whatever; this shit happened in the Berkshires.

Of course, all their security theatre commands a budget increase and attempts to instill a sense of fear of the state into students.

We’re worried about school board meetings being taken over now but the administrations went full right wing fascist 30 years ago.
