I don’t think this is implied. The idea is probably that, like so many things, it’s on a spectrum and ‘asexual’ would describe one end of the spectrum. There is another end of the spectrum, but no one is saying everyone is on the outer end of it. But I must admit, I do somewhat share your sentiment, I’ve read lots of things by self-proclaimed asexuals in which I recognize myself, but I also think I have a quite average sexdrive. It makes me wonder if some people aren’t just a bit too eager to define themselves as different from the norm. I’m not talking about the further end of the spectrum, but there are those that really aren’t that different from your average person, but seem to want a box to fit in. Reading their description I would place them somewhere in the middle and still they describe themselves as asexual. Not that I care, go ahead, define yourself whatever way you want, if you want to think that you’re very different go ahead, it really doesn’t bother me, and who knows maybe you’re right, who am I to tell you you’re wrong?

Watch the telly. Television tends to keep people somewhat informed but apathetic.

If they’d make people actually feel the horrors of the world, then people would stop watching. They know this so what they do is deliver it all in a way that promotes apathy. They do show you things but structure it so that the implicit message is: don’t worry, do watch but whatever you do, don’t worry, it’s all fine, business as usual. “New report comes out, humanity is destroying the planet faster than ever before, biodiversity is plumetting […] (jingle) there’s a genocide going on and we are supporting it […] (jingle) in other news: a baby panda was born at this zoo. […] (jingle) now for the weather. . […] (jingle) thank you for watching, see you tomorrow.”

What you’ll find is that despite you being somewhat aware of current events, most of the time it all feels like an abstract thing that doesn’t really worry you. Seldom does anything you see on the telly push you to do anything. “Some important news just reached me through the telly, that means that I will now do so and so…”, yeah right. I do nothing, maybe I walk to the fridge to get a soda, since ads do have calls to action. The news has a subliminal call to apathy. So I sit back down and continue to watch my entertainment.

This article is from 2015. By then it’s been 10 years since the company started, and he already left it. In the article he explains that still only 25% of the cacao used in Tony’s Chocolonely is guaranteed slave-free, let alone that they’ve had any significant impact on the industry at large. He says the situation of slave labor in cacao industry has only worsened. Tony’s has changed the message on their product “100% slave free” (which was false advertising) to something like “working together towards slave-free chocolate”, which he concludes to be meaningless marketing. It’s rather bizarre that such a message is allowed on a product that contains cacao from slave-labor…

Some info, that’s interesting and helps balance this blatant advertisement. Tony’s was started by Dutch television maker Teun van der Keuken. He worked on a program that exposes products for their production methods and false marketing and so on. They stumbled onto the slavery that’s part of the cacao industry. He asked to be arrested for eating chocolate, and in doing so enabling slave labor, but he wasn’t. He started out Tony’s Chocolonely to attempt to change the chocolate industry. He’s not part of the company anymore. He has concluded the mission has failed, and is very critical of his former company, saying they’ve lost sight of the aim: slave-free chocolate.

The consequences keep me from doing things.

Personally I don’t murder because I don’t want to and I feel like it’s wrong to do so. Sure there are consequences, but I really don’t need them to stop me from going out murdering people. Perhaps there are people who do need these consequences, but it seems a fair statement to say that most don’t.

I would love for this to become successful! I am assuming it’s not in any great state yet, but the decentralized future is waiting for us !

Don’t let yourself be fooled. Lemmy is doing great. It’s got a lot more user than half a year ago and it will continue to grow. You should look at the bigger perspective here. People are starting to understand the point of the Fediverse more and more and it will eventually take over enshitified platforms such as Reddit
