My thought on this:
If it was bad, wouldn’t we know by now?
SSD-only systems have been a thing for over a decade, and SSDs themselves have been around for decades.
If standard swap files damage SSDs, someone probably would have said something.

I say keep the flow coming, because the good shit eventually floats to the top.
The more people here, the more attractive it becomes to bigger-names, which will then bring their audience over.
how did you make it to Fediverse-B without knowing about Fediverse-A?
I know this is an old post, but anyone that knows anything about Elon has known that he’s always been a big asshole.
It’s been nearly SIX YEARS since he started the weird name-calling online (calling someone a pedo). He’s only been ramping up the idiocy since, with it really going into overdrive during the pandemic.
The period from six years ago to three years ago he was mostly a meme. “What wacky shit will Elon post this time?” is what people thought. He became more common in the public’s eyes. It didn’t mean people actually liked him or that he was a cool dude.
He’s gone down hill more the past three years, and especially the last one year.
He posts stuff like “lock Fauci up” and conspiracies and other right-wing / Qanon shit. Giving a platform to right-wing / Qanon / nazi idiots. He’s destroying twitter, chasing away advertisers and normal people, and welcoming human garbage. Don’t you recall all the fuck Spez / reddit drama, where they kicked off 3rd-party apps? Elon did the same thing with Twitter.
Well, the destruction of Twitter AND Reddit, especially so close to each other, is leaving a hole in my heart.
The magic of the “fediverse” can be both a bandaid and a fix.
A shiny, new replacement (Mastodon and Lemmy) for me to fall back on for comfort, and a new paradigm of social interaction (Fediverse) that will hopefully offer long-term immunity from assholes that want to destroy everything.
The more people on the Fediverse, the better it can become for everyone.
I thought Threads joining the fediverse was a GOOD thing, and even the Mastodon Org seems cool with this. More users = better.
Wanting to block Threads does nothing to Meta, and only hurts users. It would be like blocking all email from Gmail because you know they read your messages to generate targeted ads. You wouldn’t be teaching Google a lesson, just hindering interoperability between people.
If anyone else reading this thread, I could go for a Bluesky invite.
I’ve had a Mastodon account for a while, and a Twitter account since 2008. I could always go for more social sites, though.
I thought about that after making my post.
Just like there are shitloads of bad SD cards (no-name, unbranded, generic, etc.), it’s just as cheap and easy for any random company to produce their own SSD and get it in circulation on the market just like legitimate SSDs.
Any SSD that could be damaged by a swap file is not an SSD you should have anywhere near your system in the first place (even if you never plan on putting a swap file on it).
