Appreciate the comment. I agree voting in theory is a good idea but I think a majority of people use it as not intended and it’s creating a net negative experience for the social media that utilizes it. Too many people use downvoting to show dissatisfaction with an opinion instead of the intended this doesn’t add to the conversation. Dog piling is a major issue IMO, psychologically many see negative votes (or many downvotes) and are inclined to treat those comments or posts with more derogatory comments or oppose the commenter before even reading the full post or comment. That’s a very real general example of functionality that’s shutting down engagement and being contradictory to the intent of the social media system being used. For a specific example, browse all with the new filter on lemmy and look at how many posts get downvoted right out of the gate that are perfectly legitimate posts for the communities they’re posting in. The moving good content to the top of your feed intention of upvotes doesn’t really work well in the fediverse without algo based feeds and the top filter could easily switch to views and comments to get the desired results without all the downside of how it is now.

If this were a minor issue I wouldn’t be commenting and would support the standard just ignore votes spiel but it seems to be that most people cannot handle the current voting system so I still see no benefit to them in their current form. The fediverse is the perfect environment to iterate and innovate on a system that doesn’t work as intended.

I think upvoting and downvoting should be removed in its current form. There should be a way to report content that doesn’t contribute to conversations or is hateful and if you want to know how popular a post is go off of alternate engagement metrics like views/comment count.

I genuinely see no benefit to upvoting or downvoting if the above mechanisms are in place. Upvotes are something many folks get obsessed with and downvotes are too easy to spam, especially on a social network that consists of mostly anonymous users. This post is a good example - it’s adding to the conversation and trying to spur engagement with the community but at the time of me commenting it has -1 upvotes (via Voyager since it aggregates downvotes/upvotes). What is the point of these mechanisms - they should be left to Reddit and the fediverse should innovate in this area and make something better than what we already had.

Just because LD approaches Trek themes from a comedic angle doesn’t mean it’s not Star Trek. No need to gatekeep.

Totally, I prefer movies that avoid writers rooms and armies of producers and just go for the more auteur approach. Monsters is very underrated!

I haven’t used matrix just yet but I’ll take a look now that you’ve mentioned it! Since a portion of this channel is focused on gaming I would ideally like to be able to have lfg convos and move to game chat with folks and discord is perfect at that, especially with console support.

By new concept I just mean that because its an isekai story it seems like it will mainly take place in some fantasy world instead of the typical DC universe and I think that could be interesting.

I’m usually a little iffy about them too. The Batman anime comes to mind because it was interesting but not really that good - felt almost like a gimmick. This one seems to bringing on some really solid talent and the concept is fairly fresh so I wanna give it a chance.

I think that My Hero Academia being a hit means it’s possible for superhero anime to work if done well.

Can’t argue with that. The person’s account I was piggybacking off of recently cancelled their subscription. I havent checked to see if theres a free ad-tier version yet. If not, I’ll probably wait for the whole show to be out and see if I can find a free trial to binge with.

It’s not really an obsession for me - I’m totally fine with stuff like Babylon 5 and older cult movies that have questionable realism. Going with your example, the melting faces in Raiders actually looked cool and interesting and is a memorable cinematic moment. An uncanny valley version of Indiana Jones’ face stands out as a baffling choice to me and isn’t gonna be something people talk about for decades to come. Just use a different actor and reinvest the money you paid 100 vfx artists into something that actually makes the movie better. It was disappointing that the focus of the movie felt more on recreating the feelings we had watching the old movies than telling a story that was fresh and innovative. I applaud them trying something different in the 3rd act but I think it was a situation of being too little too late.

You are a man of class, sir! I think that’s my favorite era too. It has all the goofiness of the old movies but with this Saturday morning cartoon action vibe that I totally appreciate. I also really like the 2014 Godzilla movie because of how they treat him like a force of nature. Oh and that parachute scene is one of the best cinematic moments of all time in my book!

I am a big trekkie so it’s nice seeing more people join the party. I think you’re in for a treat because, no offense to the older stuff, I think the TNG era that you’re approaching is the gold standard for Star Trek. Camp is fun but I’ll take a Picard speech and competence porn all day lol
