Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Have you ever quit Lemmy for more than a few days?
51·11 months agoI like Lemmy but it’s honestly boring and I find myself just not using any media sites anymore. Lemmy is awesome for what it is, but I can only take so much Linux and leftist politics masturbation. I’m rarely on here more than ten minutes at a time

Jason Molina of Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co.
I’ve read his biography, I’ve listened to all of his music, and never in my life have I heard an artist whom I just wanted to give them a big hug. The guy struggled on an epic level in ways that I don’t think many do, and he makes me feel his sadness in a very intense and real way. His songwriting is exemplary and original, and his lyrics are regularly bouncing around my head.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What sorts of punctuation do you wish existed, or were in common use in your language?
7·1 year agoI’ve done this before. Example
I was going somewhere yesterday, the bank?, when I saw…
It’s also fun to interject bangs into sentences too
I was so convinced that I was going to die!, but I ended up just fine.
Ultimately, I feel that if language is descriptive and not ambiguous it is legitimate English.

3·1 year agoEn dash is very useful for
Dates (3–20–25)
Subtraction (although I think math script uses its own unique dash?) (7 – 1 = 6)
Value ranges ($20–40)Then of course there’s the beautiful—and slightly different—em dash!
RV factory worker. I make around $95,000 gross at our current pay, though it has been as low as $56,000. I tend to work between 32–39 hours.
22° assumes a specific aspect ratio. Assuming this monitor has an aspect of 9:32, the angle would be much smaller. Though I’m not sure how to calculate it lol. It looks like it’s probably closer to 15°

3·1 year agoIn KDE I hotkeyed Super+PrtSc to run
flameshot gui, so I can instantly get very good custom screen shots that I can annotate or whatever if I want. Then Alt+Super+PrtSc takes a screenshot of both displays and saves it to a custom folder
I asked an AI to calculate a side of a triangle today. The hypotenuse was 24 and both opposite sides were equal, with two small angles of 10° and a wide one of 160°. The answer should have been something a little over 12… And it very confidently said 25. That makes zero sense. Fucking AI really is stupid isn’t it.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What mis-stated phrases or words do you feel still need to be corrected (online or in person) in 2025?
11·1 year agoWell if we’re going to be talking about logical fallacies, I feel like the string of arguments that you made there is a category error. Infinity isn’t exactly a number, it’s more of a philosophical concept than anything else. I would argue that trying to subtract Infinity from Infinity is illogical and kind of silly, but it wouldn’t be a reductio ad absurdum as you put it, but instead a category error.
An absurdist argument might be more like, if I have one cat I can trade it for one dog. Therefore infinite cats can be traded for infinite dogs. This is obviously absurd, because infinite cats don’t exist, unfortunately.
