Mostly, I think of the predators working in the movie and music worlds. Corey Haim & peers are one group that leaps to mind. On the east coast Lou Perlman seems to have been the cause of a number of allegations which are glossed over on his wiki page.

It’s like they’re submerged in a world of text-based begging letters. Take a faith healing correspondence, a soupcon of charitable dontaions, and a dash of chain letters. For a modern twist, blend in signs from homeless people.

Whatever the motivation, when one person is desparate enough to try and persuade you to just give your money away, there’s a tone. If you grow up in that world, I imagine there’s a lot of reinforcement that seeps into daily conversation.
