I disagree. For me it’s helped with curiosity as it lets me explore topics and problem solving I haven’t been able to because I don’t know how to fully finish something. Oh there is this great github project I would like to run, but it’s linux only, is it possible to integrate this on my mac and add the following to it. Sure enough, LLM helps get you through it, you document the process, and boom now you have learned something new.


You may be a chef and use your recipe book to make recipes, especially ones you haven’t make much, your experience tells you what substitutions you can make, what tweaks you can make, and how to create new recipes. All without memorization.

I swear, it’s like folks don’t think before they type. Everyone uses reference information to pull from. Law books, medical books, scientific papers. No way do you memorize all or even the majority of it. You use these materials because you know how to look up information quickly, and the information is accurate, so you synthesize ideas and thoughts around it.


You can? That’s impressive. Because you multiplication tables do nothing for you when you start getting into multi digit calculations. The important part is learning how to conduct multiplication, then after that you often will let a tool do it for you.

I disagree. Certainly for systems architecture you may need a ‘good’ engineer, but you really don’t need to hire someone to automate the routine clicks you are doing every day. Oh look I have to pull and move the same data everyday, can’t I write a python script for that? Yes. And for many who are not programmers, an LLM can easily do that for you, and works just as well as that junior dev who is overloaded and can’t be bothered to do that for you.


Pretty much, or hardware that’s so expensive to run because of electricity that newer stuff makes sense. That’s always been the case, like ohh I can get cheap server hardware, until I look at my power bill.


I don’t think that’s going to be the case. All that bitcoin mining stuff, completely used up and mostly worthless at this point, and by the time the next (or two generations) comes out, so much of the old serve stuff is expensive to run, and then unsupported. I think re-use is great, but at a point real recycling needs to be the better option.


I dunno, for me at least it’s less about ‘AI’ making me more productive, but rather automation that absolutely makes me more productive. Ai certainly makes the process of getting automations in place a whole lot quicker. Any time I do something repeatedly that I don’t want to do, it’s the question of ‘how can I automate this process’, and that frees up time for other things, and ensures that what I do is more accurate. That’s not something new because of ‘AI’, but rather python has been the beacon for that for many years, with tons of books on the topic.


The skills simply change over time. It’s great that you could muck about and maybe fix something back in the day, but does that same skill apply to modern architecture? No. The true skill you learned what your ability to be curious, to constantly learn and improve, and use those skills across a wide variety of problems, not just simple tech issues. Those are the skills we should be teaching the next and future generation, rather than what the classic education paradigm has been, which is memorization and how to show up on time, to make good factory workers, which are existing less and less in the modern world. Does AI help or harm that? It’s just another tool that can be used in good or bad ways, just like the calculator.


Experience is still the most critical part. Having the knowledge (not simply knowing facts) and being able to synthesize that knowledge is what makes the 50 year old engineer with decades of experience more valuable than the 5 year old with an LLM.


That’s not how the real world has worked in a long time. Memorization of facts is essentially useless. Knowing how to find facts quickly how to analyze facts and how to apply them has far more function in modern society. That’s the difference between memorizing a multiplication table and using a calculator. Why would you memorize a multiplication table when you need to know the basis of multiplication and then utilize a tool to do that work for you much quicker? Its like saying you need to learn to write cursive before typing on a computer.


If you look at the data, by relative income there were more people earning the top marginal tax rate then than there are now. That’s the entire problem and why it’s a ignorant argument, it’s based on income. Those multi-millionaires/billionaires are not earning income, it’s investments that are driving their wealth. We already have a tax basis on that. So what the real change would be is to move to a wealth tax, however that has failed in every country it’s been enacted in.


If you look, there are very few $25k cars these days, hence the comment, the average is $50k for a new car in the US.


I don’t think pushing AI is wrong, corporate greed, wanton destruction of the environment, disregard of the future of humanity for a quick buck is the real issue. However, since no one can agree on what the future looks like, so why is anything going to change?

Yeah, the burnout is real. I keep trying to do everything I can to keep it from being ever present, but I feel without a career change and a massive risk to my financial stability that I am utterly stuck and will just keep getting fried out at the cost of keeping dinner on the table.


Don’t know about you, but a $4,500 used Toyota in my neck of the woods would be an early 2000’s Toyota with 200k+ miles and in serious need of expensive repairs. And those living paycheck to paycheck wouldn’t have a way to put down the cash to buy even that car.
Funny, so never would your brain be wrong? You never ever have to reference a book or wiki or anything for your knowledge? You must be a special kind of person then, and one who quickly wouldn’t have new information.
Since you know what 2 x 2 is because you know how to multiply, it’s pretty easy to go ‘hmm, that doesn’t seem correct, let me try something else here’.
But you do not have domain level knowledge of all subjects, and can’t memorize everything. Perhaps you know there are resources for that, and it’s more important to know how to access and synthesize information rather than stuff it into a squishy brain that more often than not get’s ‘memories’ incorrect.
