I know it’s wrong and that I’m going to Internet hell for admitting to it, but there’s a smell when Grandma would light her cigarette in the hot box car with the windows up that I find nostalgic to this day even though I find the concept of smoking in a car repugnant
The crazy thing is that it was so prevalent, I don’t really remember the world smelling smoky unless I went into a small room like my grandparents living room.
I didn’t notice it in places like restaurants and bars until after the bans came.
I would guess that my generation has a diminished sense of smell because of it.
It’s not me and I have an office. It doesn’t get to me.
But I can definitely see that it would bother a whole lot of people.
On that, I’m old enough to have begun my working life when people smoked cigarettes at their desks. This is a much, much better alternative.
People bring their dogs to work all the time in my office. Fortunately, all of us are dog lovers, so we all enjoy it.
The other trend that doesn’t bother me, but surprises me is that I’d estimate about two thirds of the people in my office vape at their desks.
We also have bean to cup espresso, which is nice. People will go find high end beans and contribute them. It works out nicely.
We’re highly educated professionals, damnit!

By tenth grade I had been commissioned to write some software. When I completed it, I walked away from all of it because of the social stigma. Didn’t touch a computer again for ten years. I won’t say I regret that because walking away led me to other life adventures, but I will say I regret the circumstances that drove me to do it.
I had to go look up when those things came out (1977) because by the time I got my hands on one in 1982 in the school library they were already little more than toys even when compared to the luxurious Vic 20.
I know we played some games off cassettes on them. I feel like Oregon trail was one of those games, but I’m suspicious of my own memory because I know I was playing that on my Apple 2, which I think had joystick driven hunting on it.
God I’m getting old and can’t remember the finer points anymore.
I do remember that other kids bullied the HELL out of me for carrying one of those plastic boxes full of floppies with me at school. Not a good time to be a nerd back then.
On the trust thing - every once in a while I’ll go to a concert by myself, stand in the back, and enjoy the moment and remember the old times.
More often than not, three or four young ladies will come up over the course of the evening and start giving me their life stories and their relationship struggles and whatnot.
This isn’t a flirting or drunk thing on either end of the equation. In that moment, they just seem to need somebody to listen to them.
What if they’re tiny men though? Like a hail report but, “Today across the central plains, residents experienced golf ball sized man rain.”
Based on illustrated stories I was fed as a child, I would now like to know if the early Christians ate the dinosaurs after they were finished riding them.
I hated this show so much, it made me legitimately angry trying to slog through it. I guess you have to have played all the games, read all the books, and sucked all the fairy dicks for it to have made any sense at all.
Since I had done none of these things, I just saw a random mishmash of characters in different places in different times with zero understanding. Nice hunchback boobs though.

You laugh, but look up no touching policies in schools. Some of them prohibit students from hugging each other. We’re going to end up with a bunch of traumatized adults who received no human contact as children.
On that, I’m one of those oh so delightful high functioning spectrum types who can’t fucking stand anybody touching me. In spite of this, I also recognize the base human need for touch for people who aren’t me. These policies are going to hurt people.
I’ve been to one of those bloody Mary bars once in my life and it was glorious. I haven’t been able to find one since. It was eleven years ago up in Tulsa, and I’m down here in boring old Dallas.
My mom was in the Mayo clinic years ago, but she didn’t describe it to be like an airport.
If she had, I would’ve made a beeline up there so I could have a bloody Mary at six in the morning without getting any funny looks.
On a more serious note, I hope you find some relief from this visit.
On a less serious note, my sister plays Scrabble with these weird count the words within the word rules. She judiciously saves up her letters until she can play “braved” in which there are like seventy five thousand words embedded.
I don’t particularly care for Scrabble, but I especially won’t play it with her.
If caffeine is considered a serious drug in my lifetime, I hope I’ve got a good cellmate because I’m going away forever.
If I had fewer scruples, I’d find out who the construction contracts for new prisons go to and invest all in. This guy is gonna get in and imprison a whole lot of people. Like a lot a lot.
