I can’t see any history discussing the change before today, but the posts from before today also seem to be more inclusivity-minded than this one. Maybe it’s just a huge oversight and they forgor. But it’s definitely not a nice look. The new rules also say you’re not allowed to report content for things that aren’t a violation of the terms of service. So if you report a content for being racist, that’s against the rules.

I’m thinking of making inactive accounts so I can create communities on other instances. I wanna make an old trek community on the Star Trek instance, but I wanna moderate it from this instance. So I would make an account, make the community, and transfer ownership.

I’m all about left unity. If someone makes excuses for authoritarian governments, they’re not on the left. If they disagree with black lives matter, they’re not on the left. If they’re transphobic, they’re not on the left. We leftists need to stick together and protect the most marginalised members of our community, by kicking fascists and bigots out. That’s what left unity means. Good old paradox of tolerance.

What’s wrong with old school forums is that they don’t have a proper UI for threaded discussions, every comment on a post is at the same level and you have to read it all in chronological order instead of in a flow that matches how people are talking to each other. Lemmy isn’t an old school forum, it’s a new school forum. Threaded discussions are awesome and way better for finding information or staying on your choice of topic.

No, awareness isn’t the number 1 protection, it’s the number 3 protection. The number 1 protection is actually having a nuanced understanding of the issues so that when propaganda tries to prey on your misconceptions, it can’t find any. And the number 2 protection is avoiding propaganda, because anything starts to sound persuasive if it’s repeated enough. Awareness is important, but it’s just not as effective as those two other protections. It has too many weaknesses.

If an algorithm knows exactly who you are, then it knows how you think, and it knows what sort of content will manipulate you politically. And right wing political content is profitable. It’s called the alt right pipeline. Most people have some kind of argument that will manage to radicalise them to any position you can name. Through correlative learning, an algorithm will look at how people like you changed their views, and it’ll send you down the same path. It’s easy.
