AI code is like alternative medicine, it’s called that when it’s bad and doesn’t work. If it does, it’s just called code. And the issue isn’t using code made by AI, it’s when people who don’t know how to code think the AI does, and blindly do without checking. That’s very unlikely to happen with the Linux kernel, as the entire project is basically just one constant code review where it really doesn’t matter if bad code was written by a human or an AI.

Even Torvalds has used AI to help with his projects, because it would be kinda silly not to.

Currently, a lot of the discarding is done by individual shops/resellers. I know of a few instances where basically all customer returns and unsold merchandise was slashed at the orders of the manufacturer to make them unusable, and then thrown in the bin.

If that is made illegal and everything would have to be returned, stored, processed and then sent somewhere else anyway, the chance that it’s going to end up with destruction greatly diminishes - opening that outlet section/shop or selling them to a local outlet company suddenly makes a lot more finacial sense.

Most people tend to agree that a person that decides to kill a bunch of random people and then themselves for no good reason is mentally ill, even if they haven’t been officially diagnosed with anything specific.
Because normal, healthy people don’t tend to just go “welp, I feel like some good old casual Friday night mass murdering and suicide tonight”.

There kinda is, as at some point the heating hits a stage where the oceans will warm up enough, and as warm water can’t hold on to as much Co2, it will be released into the atmosphere, which causes the oceans to warm up, which releases Co2, which causes… And so on.
Add in some ice melting and stuff like that, and once the feedback loop starts properly, there’s not much we can do to stop it.

Yes. But you claimed “about 5 to 6x the purchase price for a PC vs a console”. Which isn’t double or triple. And neither did I claim that you could build a PC at the same cost, I said 1-1.2k plus a few hundred more. Which is around double.

I don’t think you’ve realistically ever been able to build a matching PC at the same price ever, because they are almost always sold at cost or sometimes at a loss as the manufacturer gets their profit selling games, not the hardware. Same deal why VR hardware from Meta is so much cheaper compared to everyone else - because you need to then buy your games from Meta as well.

As for the Steam value…

If the goal is to build a PC that’s the same performance level as the console in question, even with current ridiculously inflated prices it isn’t nearly that expensive.

PS5 Pro ($699) is an 8-core AMD Zen 2 with 16Gb of RAM (shared with the GPU), a 2TB SSD, and a GPU roughly in line with an RX 9060 XT or RTX 5060TI. Late last year, building a matching PC would have been somewhere in the $1-1.2k range. Today it’s few hundred more due to the AI caused RAM shortage.

It’s when you actually want to outperform consoles and push the graphics settings far beyond the optimizations and targets of console games use when things start to get expensive fast.
But I slowly take it back one 75-90% Steam sale game at a time.

Though if you are in extremely cold weather areas, like Alaska, it actually doesn’t help at all as the permafrost keeps the basement walls and floor frozen all year round down hundreds of metres (~3 times as many hundreds of feet)

But anywhere the ground isn’t frozen, go down a few floors and it usually stabilizes somewhere around 15C/60F no matter the ambient air temperature. Fantastic for geothermal heatpumps - warmth in the winter, cooling in the summer.

The fact that they can sell you a car without having to give you all of the terms and conditions is kinda nuts. AFAIK it’s a fedia (mbin) compatibility issue with Lemmy in general, some links posted aren’t federated properly and instead just show up as the thumbnail image from Fedia.

Eh, the anthropocene extinction event will be like the sixth big one, something periodically wiping out a ton of species and life restructuring itself is kinda just natural at this point. Well, yes. Dumping high concentrations will instantly kill everything in the waterway, diluting them and doing it slowly means they can handle it and survived.

Heck, the ocean is full of salt, but if you started dumping high-concentrated brine off a beach you’d kill every animal and plant on sight, just as you would kill yourself drinking said brine. But it would be quite hard to argue that you can’t safely put salt in the ocean, or add some to your food, once it is diluted to a safe level.

The question is how much of something total can the ocean handle before it becomes a problem. And for many things the answer is, quite literally, that it is just a drop in the ocean.

Any temperature below somewhere around 60F/15C is “deadly cold”, as in your survivability depends entirely in how well you are clothed as you will eventually die of hypothermia otherwise, the only variable being how long it takes. Kinda like how you can get a 3rd degree burn with 44C water, it just takes 6 hours.

-12C really isn’t all that cold - lowest temperature in northern Finland this winter so far has been -42,8C / -45F - but it is a temperature where you will need to pay some attention on how you dress for it. For me, it’s around (-10 to 15c depending on the wind) where I’ll put on long-johns in the morning and add a sweater instead of just having a t-shirt under my jacket.
