A group of teenagers showed up to the charity event my club worked on every year. They all knew each other and I was curious what organization they might be a part of, so I asked one “so where are y’all from?” Only then did it occur to me that they were all Hispanic and the poor kid, looking unbelieveably annoyed, firmly told me “here.” I was able to stumble into my real curiosity but God that was embarrasing.

I’ll never have the cathartic moment I was dreaming about when I was a teenager where I learn martial arts and get to beat the crap out of some massive asshole who totally deserves it and everyone in the room would agree. I did the hard part of learning martial arts but I’m just not hot-headed enough to fight someone anymore. I resolve conflicts with words and any time I’ve had to defend myself, I’ve just kind of been able to separate myself from the initiator without really hurting anybody and they gave up once they didn’t have a hold of me. There aren’t many realistic scenarios where I have absolutely no choice but to hurt someone, and I can see those scenarios ahead of time and avoid them anyway.

It’s weird to me how obsessed some people are with proving to the world that their social media platform of choice is superior. The Fediverse works, we have content, and anyone who decides to seek out a platform that offers what the Fediverse offers can join. Tell your friends about your experience if they might be interested but if they don’t stick with it you don’t have to be all salty about it.

Any position I hold is toppled over with the slightest argument unless I have very recently done a ton of research on the topic. I have zero ability to recall whatever evidence I used to come to a conclusion. It’s incredibly frustrating because I do try to be informed about things but I just can’t defend anything at the pace of a normal conversation.

I didn’t get on TikTok because I didn’t like the content, not because of the format. If folks make good videos on Loops then I’m down.
