I’m subscribed to a lot of communities, too, but I still use the all feed for discovery.

I would say Mastodon already has. I’ve been spending a lot of time there over last few weeks and there’s more content than I can consume. Breaking news stories are covered well, including live blogging, although a lot of that content is cross-posed from Xitter. Plenty of people to follow, including authors, photographers, journalists and scientists. An increasing number of media outlets have a presence there, as well.

Xitter still has an order of magnitude more users, but Mastodon is mostly Nazi-free (which is nice).

Doing my bit to support the open web. Plus, while it’s probably just familiarity, I’ve always felt that Firefox works with me while Chrome works against me.

Sure, why not? Everyone has their own reasons for moving and climate contributes to an area’s quality of life.

When I moved from Southern California to the Pacific Northwest, the benign climate here was a factor. Didn’t want to live somewhere where it was blazing hot every day for months, where it was a steam bath all summer or where I had to shovel snow every winter.

I still miss PSA. When I was growing up, if you were flying between Southern and Northern California you flew PSA. They were an institution.

And now that upstart Texas airline dominates inter-California routes.

Mid 60’s in the US. I’ve always driven manual transmission cars. Fairly common for folks my age to know how to drive manual transmissions, since most of us had economy cars in the 70’s and 80’s. At that time, automatic transmissions were an expensive option and had a negative impact on acceleration and mileage.

My daughter is 29 and doesn’t know how to drive a manual transmission and I don’t think most of her peers can, either.

In my 60’s. According to Internet sources, shorthand was taught in schools until the 1990’s. It’s likely that shorthand use declined as PCs became common in offices.

I’m old enough to remember when shorthand was a required course for women in secretarial schools. I always though it was black magic and very cool.

Buy a newer car and increase my 401k contribution. Maybe I could retire a couple of years earlier than I plan to.

I’m not sure that actually works. You can search for a Mastodon user, but when you try to subscribe the sidebar buttons are missing on Lemmy.

My understanding is that you can subscribe to a Lemmy community in Mastodon, but not the other way around. Maybe there’s a trick I’m missing?

I think it depends on what sort of content is posted. If it’s mostly promotional stuff some people may feel that it doesn’t fit the vibe of Mastodon. If it’s thought-provoking content (especially journalism) then it will be a win. Either way, having The BBC on Mastodon seems like a big deal, to me, and maybe it will induce other journalists to explore the fediverse.

The Emperor’s New Groove is, IMHO, the funniest film Disney has ever made. Most of the films from the Disney revival era are basically musicals with comic relief, but TENG is pure Looney Tunes. It has a great cast and it’s laugh-out-loud funny from beginning to end.

I’ve used Lemmy Account Settings Instance Migrator, which migrates your blocked communities and settings as well as your subscriptions. It worked for me, but YMMV as the developer says it’s alpha software.

Agreed. I’m old enough to remember when you could have a rational debate with conservatives on a foreign policy question or government budget priorities or economic policy. But how do you argue with someone who believes that millions of illegal votes were cast in 2020 or that Jews secretly control the world financial system or that white people are the real victims of racism?

You can’t argue with someone who lives in a different reality than you do because there are no common points of reference. It’s the most insidious effect of over-exposure to conservative media and I have no idea how people can be deprogrammed.

In addition to a large instance being less likely to shut down and (presumably) having more resources, there’s an additional advantage to being on a larger instance: you have a more comprehensive “All” feed. Since federation with a remote feed isn’t established until (IIRC) someone subscribes to it, an instance with a larger user base should contain more subscriptions to a wider variety of content. Of course, not everyone will like that and you lose out on Beehaw content if you’re on the two largest Lemmy instances, but I think it applies in general.
