  • I just can’t subscribe to that idea. If it took 1 dick to ruin everything society would never have gotten off the ground in the first place. Hell, even today, our power grid pretty much operates off the principle of 'don’t be a dick and shoot this with the guns we all have" and it took MAGA craziness for people to attack them. I’d say compassion operates within any given system in spite of people being dicks and thats why we have prevailed the way we have.

  • Because they’re stupid and racist. They feel like they’re left out and dont know how to parse it. Some also think that anybody speaking in a language thats not English in America have something to hide. When really its just what they’re comfortable using. Forcing everyone to use and learn English at all times is like forcing everyone to use the same text editor at all times. Not everyone is comfortable in Vim or Emacs, and everyone should probably know a little about another editor rather than just their favorite. Which brings me to my final point: our education system has failed us.

  • It depends on the character. I never write perfect characters. Most of my characters are extremely flawed individuals whose flaws lead to the issues in the story, or contribute to a wider plot of some kind. I look at real people and ideals, try to get on their side even if I hate it, and make a character with those viewpoints. One thing all my characters have is sacrifice and the chance of redemption. All of my characters go through some sort of personal sacrifice to achieve their goals, not all of them redeem themselves even if there is always the chance. I do make that pathway visible to the reader. I feel it gets people in the mindset of a complete other, or at least helps them make sense of a differing thought process. And yes, I make doubly sure to do this with characters who are designed to be hated.
