If you like to research the macabre, look up Elmer McCurdy, a veteran turned outlaw that was mummified and used as a side show prop for roughly 50 years. His remains weren’t burried until the 70s.

They’re usually too busy asking for us to ‘return the slab’ to talk about computers.
Just needs a plaid shirt and a pair of khakis and you’re most of the way there.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•At what point does a person become an "adult"?English
2·1 month agoUntil relatively recently, in common law and some civil law countries you weren’t fully autonomous from your gaurdian until you turned 21. At which point you no longer needed a gaurdians approval to make some legally binding decisions. Some institutions (eg car rental & insurance companies) find 25 to be the cut off for risky behavior. However, these measures don’t capture emotional maturity as I’ve met people in their 50s that still act like teenagers.

13·1 month agoSTALKER 1979 based on the sifi novel Roadside Picnic, and was the inspiration for the video game series of the same name. It reminded me of Annihiliation 2018 but less horror/action, and more lamentations on humanity.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do you think of homeschooling?English
7·1 month agoEvery homeschooled person I’ve met has lacked all tact but YMMV. I haven’t met anyone that was homschooled after leaving university so no clue if that improves over time.
Aside from the aforementioned risk of birth defects there are no ‘other problems’ other than being outside of social norms. It could be argued that the bans of these marriages in the US were motivated not by science but a desire to more quickly assimilate immigrants. Essentially boiling down to xenophobia if not racism.

12·1 month agoFred Rogers, it was like a grandfather died when he passed.
Was the skeleton disarticulated? If not then the rabbit most likely wasn’t killed by predetors or scavenged. If it was hunted you’d see bones scattered and quite a few missing. We have foxes, hawks, and coyotes in our area and every now and then we find bits and pieces of their leftovers in the yard and on the porch but never the whole thing.
Last time I saw yolo used was by crypto bros/wallstreetbet types making bad financial decisions.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was the last live theater performance that you saw?English
2·2 months agoA college rendition of Ken Ludwig’s The Game’s Afoot. The first half was a little slow but the second half picked up considerably. Before that was A Lucky Stiff; it was quite silly but a fun watch.
At first there was Gallagher, then R lee Ermey, and now muscle mommies and zaddies are a scourge wrought onto the innocent fruit.
A lot of slang are either african american vernacular english or from incel/4chan culture in origin but over time they become divorced from their origins. If you were to ask a kid about “sigma” they’d likely have no idea that it came from incel circles. To the typical kid these terms are ‘how all my friends talk’ and the origins aren’t a consideration.
Its been around for almost a decade.
Some “old home remedies” would be: tomato sauce, for skunk; peanut butter, for gum; and prairie oyster cocktail, for hangover. Most of these either don’t work or make the mess worse so a game show where people try this on a wild animal would be disastrous and possibly humorous if you ignore the animal abuse.
Wouldn’t that change the probabilty curve? I guess it could be nice if you wanted to limit critical success and failure but it might reduce the sense of randomness.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What search engine do you guys use?English
5·3 months agoNo ai ddg has been a decent general search engine, but if I can’t find something I’ll us marginalia, mojeek, alltheinternet, and even yandex (if I’m desperate). For your research: InstallGentoo Wiki has a fairly comprehensive list of search engines albeit not the most up to date; Seirdy has a blog post reviewing many search engines including some more niche ones; and The Search Engine Map illustrates which engines use what index.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How often are your windows open? What about during Winter? or during Summer? Do you open windows to let in fresh air?English
2·3 months agoHow old is stoßlüften? I know people that are always opening windows and telling their kids to go outside to “blow the stink off” and while they have german ancestry it would be from over a hundred years ago.

Those kneeling office chairs really hurt my knees, I’m too tall to use saddle chairs at a regular desk and with exercise balls its hard for me to get the height right. As far as chairs go what helped me was finding a chair with adjustible lumbar support, and adjustible spring tension on reclining. Steelcase used to offer all of these features but it looks like they don’t have as much adjustment now. I’ve heard good things about Herman Miller but I’ve never tried them. As for lifestyle changes: a heating pad to loosen cramps, free weights to strengthen, and a foam roller to help realign the spine have all helped me. ymmv obv.
