I haven’t experienced it being slow. that might depend on the client you’re using. fortunately, there are a few to choose from.
they’ve always tacitly been cool with it. they’ve dropped little hints like this into their games since the 90s.
it’s… different and takes some getting used to. it also depends on which client you choose to use.
get started here by choosing a matrix client: https://matrix.org/ecosystem/clients/
too hard?? lmao
Matrix is a federated alternative to Discord that is both open source and highly concerned with user privacy. It’s also very popular here on Lemmy, and a lot of communities here use it.
I got to tell you, I don’t really miss those subs. I don’t think they are good for people.
many companies have multi-year commercial leases they suddenly can’t get out of and lots of office furniture they can’t liquidate. it’s a huge investment that suddenly worthless. (boo-hoo!)
I wouldn’t return to work if you offered me the whole building.
for my entire career, 100% of my work has been on the computer. once in a while, I may have some client interaction, and for that videoconferencing is fin 99.99% of the time. the 0.01% it’s not, I can go on-site. I’ve never attended a meeting that couldn’t have been an email or that couldn’t be handled via videoconference. what managers I’ve had fall into 2 categories:
Obviously, the first can be dealt with 100% remotely, and the second has positioned themselves, through being terrible at their jobs and being terrible people in general, to require workers to be present, mostly to justify their own jobs which would amount to nothing if there were no employees physically present to subject to their petty torments.
so, yeah, give me my own office? that’s not gonna cut it, as it changes exactly 0 of the reasons why I never want to return to the office, which are the commute, the stifling work atmosphere, the management, and the fact that there’s 0 reason to ever be there physically anyway due to the nature of my work.

it’s not a new community, but I just joined the mod team and I’ve updated the community guidelines in this Community Update post. It’s more permissive and, I think, much more reasonable and transparent. Coe on over, and help revitalize the community!

Good news!
I’ve just been added t the mod team over at !startrek@lemmy.ml and have posted a Community Update with new community guidelines that outline a more open policy on discussions that includes the ability to express criticism without fear of your comments vanishing or being capriciously banned without warning.
However, there are (as outlined in the post) some guidelines about how those discussions should go. We don’t want unhinged rants about how you hate X that just devolve into toxic threads. If you’re going to be critical, make it constructive criticism that fosters civil discussion, and keep it relevant to the post you’re commenting on. Irrelevant tangents and a lot of toxicity will be curtailed. But, otherwise, we feel it would be disingenuous and dishonest to outright ban all dissenting opinions and the discussion of when Trek sometimes fails to hit its mark.
Rules are in the sidebar, and if you have any questions or comments, you can comment on the Community Update post, reply to this comment, or contact me!

because I am poor
steal someone’s credit card and go buy a bunch of weed (it’s legal here). after also eating a great meal, I’d go get high in Central Park and just walk around, enjoying the views until I died.
the person would report the card stolen and get the (relatively small) charges stricken/refunded, so I’m not worried about the ethics of that.
