  • There are advantages to both. Neither is wrong. If you work hard or otherwise get dirty during the day, it’s not a bad idea to go to bed clean — especially if you sleep in the nude.

It’s also refreshing to shower in the morning, and if you work in close proximity to others, you don’t wanna be the one who doesn’t wash their ass before coming in.

Most kids seem to bathe or get bathed at night, and I’ve found that preteens really start to smell bad by mid day. I guess it’s an adolescence thing? Little kids sweat too so it’s not that, but some pretend straight up stink, and I don’t just mean boys! In fact it’s usually girls! Not trying to be sexist but I’ve found they tend to smell more.

So maybe the answer is a full shower at the end of the day and a quick shower in the morning? Of course deodorant It’s important too, and a bit of perfume or cologne, especially in a humid area.

  • When did the iPhone X come out?

And what was even crazier was when spyware bundled Android phones started costing iPhone price but having less power and people paid that. I’d say that was worse. You’re still paying that big price tag but you’re saying performance doesn’t matter and you’re willing to pay even more with your personal data.

“Oh but it’s open source.” Isn’t UNIX? UNIX and Linux are open source. iOS and Pixel Android aren’t but they’re based on open source projects. They’re the same in that regard. But one was built to suck up your personal data for Google to sell to the highest bidder. The other has failed AI and a broken keyboard. Pick your poison. But don’t dump on people for choosing privacy over flashy AI or for choosing a computer company over an advertising company.

  • I hate that Meta is using pictures of peoples’ kids without their express permission.

But can we, as a society, please get past this disgusting idea that a picture is really anything more than it appears? Okay, so using the one in the picture, I just see a girl in a skirt with a bag. I recognize that she’s somewhat pretty. But the article mentions “bare legs or stockings”. So fucking what? We all have legs — well, except a few who have had amputation or other such cases — I do not mean to not be inclusive. But I’m saying, why do we have to sexualise it? Because a few people do? Because someone at Meta knew some person would and used it as a sly marketing technique? Possibly because something like 200 million Americans voted for or refused to vote against a president who is pretty much a pedophile?

Can the majority of us just see that picture as “pretty girl” or even just “girl” or maybe “content girl” or “moderately successful young woman” without reading any more into it?

I may be on the asexuality spectrum (I am not ace, I might be demi) but a girl in a skirt standing in a house, whether she’s 13 or 23 or 33 or 43, it doesn’t do anything for me. It’s not a sexy picture. Maybe this is one of the more mild examples? Anyway, the way we sexualise people, adolescent girls in particular, just perpetually annoys me. At time it disgusts me as well, but I find it annoying that our minds go to the sex appeal — or to what we perceive to be the sex appeal to those less ethical than us — of a person who happens to be female.

  • I knew who he was from the meme, and I knew he was some sort of alt-right influencer, but other than that I couldn’t have told you much about him. Honestly still can’t. I don’t care for politicians or anyone in that circle of influence.

I have friends and colleagues all over the political spectrum. Guess which ones really don’t like it when I say “can’t we all agree that they all suck and just get along?” Yeah, it’s the conservative/authoritarians. I mean yeah, the liberal/progressives who fight for us are more aligned with our — that is to say, those of us on Lemmy who lean left — views might be better, but they still exist in a grey area, they still do what they need to to get ahead. We accept that those things are necessary but I don’t think any of them are saints. But on the other side? They believe their leaders can do no wrong, and that is worrying. But they love when Trump does bad things to dark-skinned people or the LGBTQ+. They love him for the things we despise him for, from the child predator shit, to the attack on the country almost six years ago, the felony convictions, and all the piss poor decisions he’s made in office.

  • For paying people more in some markets and adjusting the prices to be about the same everywhere. So the way a business works is, they have certain profits they have to make to appease the shareholders, and this has to improve year after year. It doesn’t always, but to do so is the goal. So when things like regulation and etc. raise their costs, they raise their prices so their profit still increases.

Honestly, Taco Bell used to be cheap. Now it’s not. It hasn’t been cheap for a long time. But yes, all fast food places have gotten crazy expensive.

Sit-down restaurants have gone up, too. But not as much. So if you want a burger, a sit-down place might not be cheaper, but it might be a better value.

Fast food has kind of always been a scam though. You’re paying for the convenience. So in the west market, Hardee’s (which is called Carl’s Jr. out there) marketed a burger about 20-25 years ago called the “Six Dollar Burger.” They argued that their burger was the equivalent of what you’d pay six dollars for at a sit-down restaurant. What they assumed their customers were too stupid to understand was, that “six dollar burger” at a sit-down restaurant came with fries and cheese and was still bigger. By adding fries, the $4 burger got real close to that $6 price. The combo was more. So they were banking on people not being smart. Naturally, it worked. (Hardee’s just called it the Thickburger. They’ve since discontinued the whole line. Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr. no longer make thick burgers anymore. They’ve honestly been trash ever since. And most burgers in fast food start at six bucks now.

  • I once tried to design a system where humanoids lived like this. For a story. In the end it was more trouble than it was worth, so I scrapped the system entirely. But, here’s what I remember:

Females carried eggs, and like humans (our species), they were born with all of them they were ever going to need. However, they did not have a uterus, per se; rather, the vagina was narrower, tapering off to a point at the top where the cervix would be, and could self dilate in heat, and that led to a network of fallopian tubes. Like at least four of them, maybe as many as 8. Every cycle, an egg would release into just one of these tubes, and it would take a week to pass through. The whole time, it would be viable, but it wouldn’t need to be supported by all the things that make up periods. So instead of periods, the females of the species would just get a smelly discharge once a month.

Now for the males: they would have a birth canal, and a prehensile thing like a penis, but longer and narrower that would penetrate the female and pick a path to take. If it encountered an egg, it would take the egg in a sac at the end, protecting it, withdraw from the female, and insert the egg into his womb, where it would be fertilized somehow by seed, which builds up and swims around freely inside the womb, dies and is flushed out, so they both have these fertility periods that need to match up (and are tied to arousal).

So a female of the species could be penetrated, but it was narrow like a urethra, you couldn’t even get a finger inside. And it might even be tied to the urinary tract (that would make sense, especially since we’re trying to make the female more like the male of our species).

The problem with this thought process is, our definitions of male and female typically describe who carries the seed and who carries the egg. If “men had babies,” they wouldn’t be male, they’d be female, because that’s how we define female. So my system, I tried to create one where the female still carries the egg, but the male incubates it as well as seeds it.

CW: Sexual violence — stop here if that would bother you (though, we’re still talking about aliens — your call)

In this system — and this would have been relevant — sexual abuse of females would have been greatly reduced, and sexual abuse of males would have been far more common. Also, amputation of that long, narrow, prehensile organ would have been a thing that was done, and it would not have been lethal, but it would have removed that male’s ability to have babies with a female partner. (I was developing an alternative where a second male could enter the picture, and use his to move the egg from the female to the wounded male and it would still work.) Of course, abusive penetration of the birth canal to damage that would also be a thing.

I also began to explore how homosexuality — female to female, and male to male — would work within this system, but I did not get that far. I had a male and female character in mind. Brother and sister — and their sibling relationship was basically that of any siblings in our species, and at this point neither of them is sexually active, so it’s not a factor. The idea was to show “they’re humanoid aliens but they have values similar to ours.” The male character was always going to be gay, though, and I needed to work out how that would work, both physically and socially. It’s bad enough being a straight cisgendered man trying to write women or gay men in our own species, but I was working with humanoid aliens, so there were more differences. What I was going to be getting at was that these men, these gay men, had things in common with women in our species as well. (I never developed a partner for my character. But my character does get abused in that way and I was planning on his partner assisting in him getting pregnant somehow and overcoming that. And still losing the baby, contributing to his feeling that he isn’t meant to be happy.)

    End CW

As for the actual story, I haven’t scrapped it (and I’ve told you nothing about what it’s actually about), but I don’t think I’ll use the overly complex system. I don’t need it anyway. But asking about men getting pregnant? There’s a ton of mpreg content, and ABO (Omegaverse) in the fan fiction world, especially anime, so I thought I’d offer a unique and original take on it.

  • I think it’s like the trolley problem: a trolley (like a train) is barreling down the tracks to a fork in the tracks. You have a lever that will divert the train. Tied to the tracks dead ahead are five innocent people who will all certainly die if you don’t throw the lever. However, one innocent person is tied to the tracks that you would divert the trolley to. Assume the trolley has no passengers and all five (or the one) will certainly be killed by the trolley.

The dilemma here is that by doing nothing, you could say you have nothing to do with the five people dying. You didn’t put them there. You can blame the person who did put them there, but by doing nothing, you can say you have no blood on your hands. Or you can pull the lever, but then the blood of the one person is absolutely on your hands, but you can say you saved the other five.

Diverting the trolley is the lesser of two evils. But is it the right call? Depends on the situation.

  • That stupid song about the Windows registry. Don’t look it up, or at least don’t come crying to me after listening to it 50 times. It has no right being as catchy as it is. I fear for younger people and how God generated music will sound in a year or two.

I used to ask why classical music wasn’t performed by Metal bands. Now I can have AI make it for me and it shouldn’t even be that hard given the songs are already written. Now if I were to say “compose a new symphony in the style of Beethoven and make it sound like Iron Maiden are playing it… that would be different.
