active is about what posts have a lot of comments recently.

hot is completely useless because its filled with content that’s less than an hour old with virtually no comments. its very poor quality content.

its not about the instances, those are actually hindering growth by dividing communities across instances and defederating them. lemmy is basically several copies of reddit in a trench coat pretending to be a social network.

we don’t need more memes, we need people to start going to the games, movies, shows, and hobbies they like and making posts.

until personal interest groups are populated people will not use this site. its basically 1 big meme sub right now with some tech and politics sprinkled on top.

Anything past BO1 is filled with bullshit that just detracts from the whole experience. Sure, there is more to do in the later games, but they also lost a lot of the simplicity that made zombies great.

Simple compatibility and useability. It works with nothing and handles like I’m trying to have a debate over single channel walkie talkies. Does your audio interface work? Probably not. How about your keyboard software? Nope, not that either. Well surely it supports the most common GPUs for AI, gaming, and content development? No, it’s not officially supported. So when the only way you can use Linux without complications is just barebones equipment to edit flat text files or browse the internet in a web browser, you just ask yourself why bother when windows doesn’t force me to the terminal when I want to solve a simple problem.

Okay, but why aren’t those posts showing up in hot as opposed to the 20 minutes old posts with 20 upvotes? Now I can only see what is relevant from the last 6 hours when the hot page should be organized so I can see the relevant news for today at almost any point. Instead it’s half filled with minutes old memes. The hot algorithm needs a lot of work.

The size of the community isn’t the only problem though. The hot page is filled with very recent posts making I virtually random as to what posts you see there. It’s not about what post people are upvoting today, there is some aberration that brings up sub 100 vote posts to the top in their first hour over a 6 hour old post with 1000 votes. Active is also filled with days old posts making it useless for keeping up with current events too.

That was what the popular page was supposed to do. In reality it just made more subs that I’m not interested in rise to the top instead of posts that a lot of people are interacting with. I don’t really care about some random sports teams rare upset that day, or a nitch reality tv show episode that randomly popped into the feed. It’s just not interesting.

Reddits hot page shows posts based now how many upvotes they’ve gotten against an exponentially increasing negative score based on the age of the post. This prevents day old posts from filling the hot page, forcing new topics to the top and generating new discussions. Here half my hot page is under an hour old, on Reddit most of the hot page is 6 hours or more, sometimes less in my sub feed if it’s a slow day. I can’t figure out what’s wrong with the hot page here, but it feels awful to use any of the filters. I’ve been resorting to constantly flipping through the various filters hoping something feels as fresh as reddits hot page, but I haven’t figured out if any of them work for that yet.

Ignorance is much stronger than apathy.

If threads becomes larger than the entire fediverse, then it’s stupid to not be compatible with them to use their content for the mastodon users. You can also begin to pillage users every time the platform does something stupid with theoretically minimal issues of losing followers.

I do believe that would be the point.

That’s gunna last all of 5 minutes once they start offering payment for federating.

Simply, because that would involve disassembling them, potentially causing collapse and destroying more than we would find.
