Almost across the board, new technology is used to spread two things: religious dogma and porn.
And the farmer’s almanac, but mostly the Bible and porn.

Not just their business practices, but also just the oculus purchase.
I already had an oculus. I was told (via press release) that I wouldn’t have any issues with not having a Facebook account…only for them to turn around a little while later and require a Facebook login.
This describes what I want - being able to have relatively blank walls/spaces that light up and fill up with content when you’re wearing the headset.
It’s social media in the technical definition - it’s a place to view media, both entertainment and news, with commentary, groups, the ability to follow someone, etc. Which makes it social.
But yeah, it’s not quite like Facebook/Instagram/LinkedIn. A little bit like Twitter though.
My concern is that if you can drop tens of billions of dollars on a single acquisition, what’s to stop you from spending “just” one billion to manipulate the situation to put your target in a vulnerable situation?
Our entire society is set up to wring out anyone who is unfortunate enough to find themselves buying anything.
And as resources get squeezed, more and more people are trying to claw at smaller and smaller pieces of the overall economic pie.
The breaking point will be catastrophic.
We can’t even trust employers to not steal wages, sexually harass, or be decent humans to adult workers. There’s no way a literal child should be expected to hold their own in an employee/employer relationship.
I’m finding out that I’m codependent. I avoided this term for a long time because of connotations I had of it with “co-addiction” but really, it is a situation like what you describe - I provide help all the time, and I never ask for or feel like I can accept it. I have so many instances in my past of help coming with strings, or being massively let down, or just being slammed with other people’s incompetence that it makes me physically uncomfortable. All of this stems from and reinforces the idea that I have to be responsible because everyone else around me is being messy and useless.
Long story short - ask for help anyway. Even when it feels like shit, you have to get used to it. Like others have said, be specific and direct, and accept the idea that they may say no, and it probably isn’t personal. “I need help with…” doesn’t work unless it includes, “Can you help me with this?”
I’m not sure that hypocrisy has ever stopped world leaders who have money on the line.
It also drives home the point to anyone in a position of authority and responsibility: you will be asked to make compromises. You will be asked to make sacrifices. You must be willing to accept your own responsibility in that decision making, because you put yourself in position to do so.
Sometimes, when faced with only negative choices, you have to be willing to accept the stain of the least evil of them.
Kind of like every American president is an unindicted war criminal. We can imagine that most, if not all, of them didn’t go into it to commit evil acts, but they had to be ready to do so if the other options were worse based on whatever calculus they were able to do at the time.
I think it’s safe to assume that OP is venting frustration.
But you know what? If you used this kind of energy to attack the monied interstate that are bleeding is all dry, instead of the frustrated not to no normal person who doesn’t want to keep paying someone else’s inflated mortgage, maybe things would get better.
Honestly, I agree with the antiboomer sentiment.
But at the same time, it is annoying when you’ve had an included service for decades that will now be worse or cost money.
I loved mine, but eventually they started rejecting. But instead of being pushed out, it was like my skin was repeatedly cracking while trying to absorb them. Sucks, because they looked great.
They sell your transaction history to advertisers.
Centralized vs decentralized is a structural decision.
Censorship is what can be done within that structure. Centralized censorship means one group is able to block content, whereas decentralized “censorship” means that you can go to another platform with little to no fuss.
I use quotations because censorship is when you censor someone and stop their message from being seen, which you cannot do in federation. No one is required to megaphone info or opinions they don’t want to share, so it’s not really censorship to block content on your own instance.
Look at historical examples like the Serene Republic of Venice.
Basically you have an oligopoly that controls the levers of power and elects one of their own to be the leader.
Also read up on selectorate theory. There’s a good book called The Dictator’s Handbook that goes into detail, and for a shorter way to consume this info you can watch the YouTube video Rules for Rulers which is based on the same book.
All governments are nested resources distribution streams. Resources flow up to the decision maker, which then distributes resources back down the chain to buy loyalty to maintain power. Regimes change when one side or the other experiences a major disruption.
Someone posted some tools above for migrating/backing up subs.
I have a kbin and a lemmy.world account. I’d like my own instance at some point, but I’ll definitely be keeping these other two accounts handy.
Real life is not speech and debate, and it isn’t an ad hominem to look at Meta’s past actions and to expect that they will continue in the same way.
We don’t have to have a crystal ball and be able to detail exactly what will happen and when to know that this is bad news. Expecting random internet users to outthink a mega corp and send an accurate and verified copy of their plan is absurd, and it seems like a bad faith attempt at discussion.
Why do people tap their breaks in the left lane when passing someone slower on the right?
Please stop. Tap your breaks if you’re signaling something going on in front, or if you need to slow down faster than just taking your foot off the gas will slow you.
