  • Almost made it years ago … I’m a recovered alcoholic and one of my recovery options was to be admitted into a facility but I wasn’t that far gone yet so I was able to go through lighter treatment services and go through the 12 step program instead … that was over 30 years ago and these days I feel like I’m edging towards losing my sanity again every day.

I only made the comparison of social media to a mental hospital because just about every day I see more and more deluded realities than ever before. At one end, I have my younger relatives (under 30 years of age) living some kind of weird online life that they try to emulate like a k-pop reality show, a soap opera or a comedy show with a laugh track (meanwhile their real life situation is anything but) … and at the other end, I have older relatives (over 50 years of age) who only ever want to be angry, afraid or semi or fully racist or fascist (when in real life their lives are good peaceful and they would never be openly racist or fascist, or show any support for it!). People keep telling me that maybe it’s just the quality of people I am around … but I look into other social media feeds with family who live in the cities down south, the rural areas, the northern remote areas or the busy suburban areas and its almost all universally the same. And I know a variety of people … poor trailer trash types, northern poor people, native families living on reserves … as well as middle class white people living in cities, upwardly mobile professionals, teachers, office workers, government workers, a few medical doctors and nurses and even a couple of millionaires who live in the city.

I should also clarify that these observations are all about corporately owned social media … and yes I know that they are heavily influenced and managed to be like this … but still, it feels so overwhelming that at one point, it does feel like being trapped in some kind of institution. Sure I can leave but all or most of my family and friends are in there. Most of the people I know are not technically savvy or interested and they just prefer being on FB, IG or TikTok or even X … and whenever I do see them there, I feel like I’m visiting the FB Ward or the TikTok Ward of a giant facility full of deluded people.

  • Also doesn’t say what kinds of cancer. In those same time periods, lots of chemicals and substances have been introduced while CRT TVs disappeared. We might not have cancer causing rays from our TVs anymore, but we’re eating more cancerous materials, in, on or around our food everywhere … not to mention surrounding ourselves with plastics, chemicals and substances while closing ourselves inside perfectly sealed homes that trap everything inside for us to breathe and ingest.

We’re basically the Romans from a thousand years ago who installed lead in everything everywhere and basically poisoned themselves. We call them stupid for not knowing that … we’re doing the same thing to ourselves now with a thousand other chemicals.

  • The same meter is used for every decision …

    • show gay pride flag
    • show pink ribbon
    • show black ribbon
    • pizza party Friday
    • use more AI
    • throw children in boiling oil
    • use more solar
    • use more green energy
    • supporting Nazism
    • replace lead paint in offices
    • raise worker pay
    • apply more OSHA regulations and keep workers safe
    • destroy all life everywhere
    • bean bag chairs
    • ping pong tables in workplace

… and depending on whether or not anything will throw the meter to Maximum profit or Maximum loss, the company, the CEO and the board will get behind anything, as long as it means more money for them.

The second coming of Christ could arrive tomorrow and if supporting Satan to battle against the Son of God meant more profit for the company, the company would throw all their support behind the Dark Prince and they would all hail Satan, regardless of how Christian they might have been beforehand!

  • “I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the sea-shore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.”

    • Isaac Newton

  • Always loved the Simpsons and I’m happy I grew up watching them … my favourite commentary on wealth in the show was how they portrayed Montgomery Burns … “I have two buttons behind this desk: one will supply your town with power, the other releases the hounds” … ! … ? … ! …? … “release the hounds”

of even better … the ‘See My Vest’ song

See my vest, see my vest,
    Made from real gorilla chest,
Feel this sweater, there’s no better
    than authentic Irish setter.

See this hat, 'twas my cat,
My evening wear - vampire bat,
    These white slippers are albino
    African endangered rhino.

    Grizzly bear underwear,
Turtles’ necks, I’ve got my share,
Beret of poodle, on my noodle
    It shall rest.

Are we talking about American candy bars or European candy bars? … because if it’s in Texas, the child is going to have instant diabetes and will probably lose both their feet … if it’s in Switzerland, they’ll probably break their fingers trying to snap that many Toblerone bars

  • Most global historic statistics have fairly accurate information for first world countries but seldom have any for developing, third world countries or rural populations.

I’m Canadian, Indigenous Canadian and my parents were born in the wilderness in the 1940s when starvation was still a thing when they were children. They got an education but one that centered around beating the ever loving shit out of you for being brown than in teaching them how to read or write. Even though they lived in a first world country, their generation in Indigenous Canada was more or less illiterate. And that was the style at the time … you counted only the people that were worth counting and you didn’t count those you didn’t care about (which was usually 90% of the rest of the world).

So in the 1950s, when the US, UK and French average literacy rate was about 70% to 80%, they only represented less than 10% of the global population … most of the world was unrecorded, badly recorded or just ignored, the global average at the time was about 20% (or probably less)

  • The goal state is the same state of mind as that of the deranged cat lady who needlessly wants to own as many cats as possible and keep them all in her house.

It’s a mental illness where the person collecting money and wealth only understands collecting more and more endless amounts of wealth and power … more than they can ever realistically ever enjoy in one lifetime.

Think about it … it’s like wanting to horde bananas … the person keeps hording endless amounts of bananas until their banana pile is the size of Mount Everest and reaches into the clouds … but the person keeps wanting to add to the pile and not allow any else to touch their pile or take anything from it.

  • That is interesting … but that’s the written language. Up until about 1950, literacy was only reserved for those who could actually afford a decent education. A hundred years ago, it was only a very small percentage of the population who could actually read or write. The vast majority of speakers spoke only a common language that was particular to their location and history … so the English they spoke was probably very different than what was being written by a nobleman from their time period.

Another fascinating read is just basic Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain … one of the reasons his writing became so famous was the fact that he wrote his characters speaking in every day language that people spoke … not a polished aristocratic uptight proper English that only the most wealthiest and properly educated people could appreciate.

The excerpts in that blog post are interesting but they would only represent the language of the most wealthiest people of their particular time. If you spoke and listened to a common worker from their same time period, you’d probably hear an entirely different language being spoken … and the difference would be even more pronounced the further back in time you went.

  • This is what I love about any movie/tv show/book/novel/short story about the future … it’s all spoken in the same language that we all understand now.

But if we could listen to regular everyday English spoken in North America 100 years ago, it would sound a bit off and unusual. Listen to English as it was spoken in England 300 years ago and it would probably sound very strange and unsual, go back to 500 years ago and we would probably have a hard time understanding.

The same thing is going to happen in the future (IF there is any kind of future and we don’t blow ourselves up or kill ourselves off in some unusual, creative and complicated way) … historians will listen to recordings of how we talk today and think of us in the same way we think about someone from 1800. Go even far into the future about 500 years and someone from 2526 will probably not be able to understand anything we’re saying unless they use a translator of some kind. Those people 500 years from now will probably look back us like we’re making grunting sounds like some cave people from prehistory.

  • I think its done by design to drive people away from using a browser where people have more control and the website has less control (of course depending on the skill and patience of the user)

Having a shitty service on browser and on certain devices just drives people to view Youtube more and more on self contained smart services like Smart TVs or dedicated viewing devices.

I use Linux, firefox and have ad blocking extensions … and sometimes Youtube just becomes unusable

Great idea but there’s a reason why people have a hard time getting the GIF train rolling

#1 being that GIF is turning into an ancient internet image standard that is sort of kinda maybe adopted and supported … it was supposed to be retired because it was an old format but it is surviving because of some strange attachment we all have to this format … and any site that offers to host a GIF is often technically not really hosting a GIF but instead a WEBM masked as a GIF … because to host an actual GIF, like the one from the top post of the highqualitygifs community … you have to load a 47MB GIF file from an image website (the same video file for the same or better quality could be contained in a WEBM or MP4 for about 4MB). (Don’t get me started on the whole WEBM / MP4 open source debate) The problems start in first creating the GIF file and to make it as high quality as possible while minimizing its file size … GIF is not very efficient are reducing file size … and whatever blood sacrifice, chicken entrails black magic you can conjure in order to make a great looking video file as small as possible and save it as a GIF is a dying art … and even once you get that magical GIF, you have to find a good hosting service to carry it and display it while also not severely altering it or rerendering it in whatever format is suitable to them because every platform has their own peculiar way of hosting a GIF … and then you run into the issue of which hosting site renders or displays a GIF is compatible with the fediverse platform you want to display it on and whether or not it will get displayed on the website browser or on a phone app (and also which app) or both or neither.

I tried creating GIFs before and it is like pulling teeth from an epileptic shark … and creating it is only the first step … finding a way to have it uploaded and displayed properly on as many platforms and services as possible is akin to trying to pet a rabid hyena.
