From the outside looking it it does appear that way but it seems so…un-American. I’ve spent a decent bit of time over there over the course of my life (north of 6 months total, mostly up and down both coasts) and I’m genuinely very fond of the US and its people and that has given me this internal sense of what “un-American” is if that isn’t a ludicrous statement.

The whole “rig things to your advantage” thing is really mask off at this point and I’m surprised that it’s tolerated.

That’s an interesting one. I live in a small town (~10K). It’s a fairly middle-class suburb of Dublin and the only place I’ve ever voted (but many times). Makes me curious if it’s different in other neighbourhoods.

Nvidia Riva 128 AGP with 4 megs of ram. I will never ever forget when they released hardware accelerated opengl drivers and I played Quake GL for the first time. It was hitting 120fps and looked absolutely beautiful compared to the software rendered games I’d played up to that point.

For life in general I would agree but for human level intelligence I’m not so sure, in our galaxy anyway. The number of things that had to line up for us to be the dominant lifeform on the planet is enormous.

Goldilocks zone. Life. Large outer gas giants. Complex life (someone correct me if I’m wrong but I believe this has only happened once in 4B years / all complex lifeforms have a common ancestor) Oxygen tolerant life. Hundreds of millions of years of evolution. Multiple mass extinctions. Planet habitable for enormously long periods. Evolution of large brains for the first time. Etc

You will not believe this but when I emailed for my prescription earlier I was told I’m well overdue (2021 was my last test) and I said “time flies”. She took the time to write “OUT OF DATE” twice on the scan.

Just wanted to come back and say thanks. I emailed my optician for my prescription and bought a pair of glasses off this site for €17 delivered (about $19 USD). Do you mind me asking how long yours took to arrive? I’m in one of the “standard delivery” countries.

Ah! I knew there was a place someone had mentioned to me before that they were happy with and couldn’t remember the name. It was Zenni. I ended up buying from that site linked above for very cheap and I’m going to do some experimenting with these scratched ones when the new ones get here.

Yeah one of the recommended things I saw was furniture polish or car wax to fill them in. Both would only be temporary. Based on the replies so far I may give this a whirl as I don’t see it being damaging.

Ah unfortunately they’ve taken a bit of abuse over the years. Nothing major so the scratches are really tiny but enough of them have built up from rough and tumble with the kids etc. that they’re a constant annoyance now. :(

I do actually do the dishsoap / warm water thing myself and find it great.

These were my backup pair on a 2 for 1 offer so I didn’t get any lens coating / thinner lens thing on them.
