I was evaluating Linux desktop prior to switching my work pc to Linux with an 8G VM and it wasn’t enough for just browsing and general tinkering.

Extending on this as it’s the first serious answer.
Intune; cloud managed, deeply integrated configuration and automation
Autopilot; having new laptops delivered directly to end users that automatically set themselves up is magic and saves a lot of time
Backwards compatibility; Linux can do this, however kernel and library dependencies make this not as good as Win11 running WinXP stuff
I expect there are instances running on old laptops in someone’s basement. Once the novelty wears off they will get forgotten by admins and die. Power costs, admin overhead, will put some off continuing to host as time goes on. But it’s like a hydra, more will pop up and life continues on. I’m lucky that I work in IT and have equipment hosted at the DC for little cost, so self hosting my Lemmy access is cool in a geeky kind of way.

That’s interesting. When away from home I set a minimum temperature to avoid pipes freezing in the winter, but why do you put the AC on a max temperature when away from home?
Whilst it’s a shame this implementation sucks, I wish we would get intelligent traffic light controls that worked. Sitting at a light for 90 seconds in the dead of night without a car in sight is frustrating.
