Omg yes!

Omg yes!

I understand you, I do… And often the rich and (in the case of the US president, or) powerful pull this shit anywhere in the world. That Dubai palm tree-shaped beach nobody lives in, the Trump golf courses in Scotland… I’m not American and I have grievances against capitalist pigs destroying good land.

Well, in one respect it’s humans - always humans - that cause destruction in one way. Even if some of us try, like backing a carbon offset program that plants trees (in correct places that historically support trees), there’s the rich and powerful creating some other hyperfixation like fast fashion, space races, greed wars, religious wars and witch hunts like the one against AI to cock it up again
On the other hand, I as a builder of tech fucking hate what the obsession with AI has done to the current global economy, and how generative AI is a complete waste of existence as its meaningful use is dwarfed by its cost…
But I do see value in developmental AI, and while it’s little more than a standard algorithmic program with memory, parameters and developer bias, it is useful at doing some work better than us, and much faster. And since the dawn of humanity we’ve been inventing things to make life tasks easier. I do believe that form of AI will persist. In a way, vehemently opposing the AI programs that make calculations or accurate code is about as righteous as refusing to use a hammer to nail together some wood, or making fearmongering pamphlets about the advent of electrified cities.
There’s a motivational app someone I know uses that has this very idea - I think it’s Finch (little Tamagotchi type deal, reels you in with cute interactions, and gives you little app-based rewards for achieving little goals). One day in a given week its like ‘Clean the bathroom sink day!’ or ‘Time to wipe down the skirting/baseboards!’
They asked GPT 4o to peer-review the choice and they trust it because they pay US$10/m for it
The next contractor is debugging why the upstairs cloakroom has a breeze running through it, only to eventually realise it should probably have four walls
A good movie for visualising this (IMO) is A.I. Artificial Intelligence.
It seems to be a 2016 CBBC reference involving a puppet called Hacker
Oatly Barista is the best I’ve had fs. You can’t buy the cheapest available product with the largest percentage of substitute ingredient and expect it to accurately represent the entire range of possibilities.

I knew it was possible

Bluesky that bad huh? I guess it really is just a fancy Twitter clone

I kept spending my money on food instead of upgrades. Here’s hoping DDR5 drops below 2x its Sept 2025 value in 2027, to coincide with Zen 6.
I tried to get RAM on eBay. 8GB & 16GB kits are not even being auctioned, and when they are sold their price tag is well over 3x their value, often 4x (~GB£170). 32GB sells for 3-4x its value (~£260-£320), almost as much as 64GB, which is often going for >2.5x (~£380-£440). If you’re desperate or are okay with massive financial waste, eBay is often the cheapest place for 64GB kits, but anything lower is relatively more expensive than just buying from distributors

Population seems to have increased and become more diverse. There’s always communities being created. It’s not recognised as a desirable platform for businesses or influencers yet so upvotes aren’t treated anywhere near as divine, but you still see some users with remnants of Reddit; massive psychological damage if they’re downvoted. I mean, makes sense, people generally use social media to feel validated about their opinions. When it comes to comparing with Reddit, Lemmy has no monetised awards or such, bots are mostly rudimentary and live on a couple communities, and there’s little toxicity, harassment etc. because the user has complete control over blocking anything and instance admins have complete control over banning and defederating. I think being able to close some doors is preferable to being wide open to all, and I don’t think it causes any “echo chambers”.
Overall, definite improvement over the years.
Black folk and trans folk have different backgrounds, culture and desires from the predominantly white-controlled society, which is why this isn’t quite the same. Also most demographics are in dire need of income to match the cost of living in a monetised world, where you have to work on average 4-5 times longer than someone in 1960 to purchase the same necessities, so all could do with a random windfall. That being said I appreciate the sentiment.
Seizure inducing? But my team assured me we could sell at least 80% of the user’s vision before inducing seizures!! (reference)
Black Knight? Great film
Same problem but when I migrated from Black Ops 1 to Modern Warfare 2 or something similar - couldn’t name my class containing assault rifles “assault”

And transphobic episodes of Family Guy and NCIS where Glenn’s ‘dad’ is a woman and Tony finds out on a date that she’s ‘a man’ and is speechless, disgusted and coworkers jibe him for it
I too vote to scrap sex reveal parties and instead use gender reveals when the kid chooses their gender
