Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a sci-fi thing you feel is achievable with our current level of technology that you'd love to see become a thing?
107·3 months agoRELIABLE public transport. I guess that’s too sci-fi

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Those who left tech for greener pastures, what do you for work now? What was the transition like?
17·4 months agoI did. Went and did security at a remote location for an extended period of time.
Turns out I hate being in the middle of nowhere more than what I was doing before that. It was a great experience but I’m never going away for that long again.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why does YouTube feel completely devoid of content? (clarification in body)
44·6 months agoThe algorithm just really sucks. Sometimes it’ll suggest good stuff, but when it next decides to update it’s just all trash for weeks.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•If Christians were real, they’d be lining up to pay for their sins (not trying to avoid judgement).
51·7 months agoLet me add this, if religion provides comfort or makes someone want to be a better person? That carries value still.

14·7 months agoThis might have been better in unpopular opinions.
But I don’t entirely disagree with you. There certainly are some true believers out there, some are better people than others.
But there are also a lot of people who use their status as Christians to essentially cover up their true personalities, there’s a lot of people who believe that just because someone goes to church that they are a good person.
I was raised Christian, but left because I just saw too many people preaching one thing but then doing the opposite in practice. There’s a lot of hate attached to a lot of Christians and I personally believe that’s against the true intended spirit of the religion.
There’s also the general history of how the church was used to control and such. But that’s a discussion I really don’t want to get into.
I mean not to offend, but arguing with a strong believer is a waste of time. The basis of religious belief is to trust without evidence, but that goes against my personal belief that nothing can be proven to be true without at least some evidence.

Gaming@beehaw.org•PS5’s three best-selling digital games in April 2025 were all Microsoft titles [VGC]
11·7 months agoI always thought console exclusivity was a wasted opportunity for more sales. Especially when it comes to selling a PC version.
Just do your best to be a good father, good parents are all any child could want. I’ve seen so many younger people with kids that they don’t look after, so maybe age isn’t the only factor of importance.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•My friend keeps defending my dad, what should I do?
2·8 months agoMaybe her view on proper parenting is also skewed by abuse? Not that it makes it ok. Was just talking with my psych, apparently the way my mother treated me growing up is considered abuse, just not the physical type. It really fucks with your head when you grow up with that sorta treatment.
Either way, don’t settle for abuse. Keep notes about incidents times, dates, what happened, any photographic evidence of bruises from beatings. Go see your local police if you trust them, if not try to look up any youth assistance groups.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•does anyone else’s family think their ambitions/goals are “stupid”?
10·8 months agoJust keep learning new things and decide which things you want to continue to chase. Some things are easier than others, but people do these things and also started at a point where they might have known nothing. It’s about how much effort you are willing to put in to gain these skills.
Of course you gotta do stuff to pay the bills now, but don’t let people destroy your ambitions for the future.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL farmers in India have a cheaper pesticide solution: Pepsi or Coke. It may be old news to you, but I thought it was a joke.English
22·8 months agoYeah it’s interesting that sugar water is basically promoting natural pest control. Mightn’t be an effective pesticide, but if the end result is still less pests, it’s a win

0·11 months agoHey, some of us prefer only the bloodiest of diamonds. Still dripping if possible. /s
Agreed. If they decriminalise and regulate it, sex work is much safer for all involved. People gotta pay bills and if sex work is their chosen profession, good for them.
Sliders. One of those accessible sci-fi shows that helped instill a love of the genre
I smoke in the bathroom with the vent fan running. Ain’t perfect but it’s keeping the stink out of the other rooms

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Eye glasses wearers in the US, where do you buy your glasses from these days?
2·2 years agoJust checking the suggestions in this thread. https://www.39dollarglasses.com/eyeglasses/extra_wide
Seems to be some of the larger cheap frames I’ve seen around

Nobody asks me anymore because I insist on educating them on how to fix their issues. It paid off after a while. They either fix their own stuff or ask somebody else lol
