I’d say it’s more that parents (companies) should be more responsible about what they tell their kids (customers).

Because right now the companies have a new toy (AI) that they keep telling their customers can make thunder from clapping. But in reality the claps sometimes make thunder but are also likely to make farts. Occasionally some incredibly noxious ones too.

The toy might one day make earth-rumbling thunder reliably, but right now it can’t get close and saying otherwise is what’s irresponsible.

Rationing downvotes could help break the groupthink while still providing a crowdsourced method of controlling spam and trolls. Other platforms have systems like this and it seems to work.

I think there have been some Lemmy instances that disable downvotes entirely also.

In terms of privacy in public, the Vision Pro isn’t much different from Google Glass. Both have video recording capabilities, and both displayed some form of indication when recording.

The only real difference is that the Vision Pro is easier to spot in public due to the bulkier design.

It will be interesting to see if there will be similar “Glasshole” reaction to the Vision Pro once they are seen in public enough.

The video makes an interesting comparison between online and offline communities, but I think it’s missed how common identities that gave offline communities cohesion have also broken down in the modern age. Increasing pressure for jobs and housing, among other things, have forced many societies to become a lot more internally mobile. This has resulted in a much diminished sense of local community because so many people rarely stay in one place long enough to form local bonds.

Supporting the local sports team and attending the local church together once helped us overlook our differences, but those shared experiences are shrinking. That loss of offline cohesion is contributing to the alienation and polarisation alongside the troubles online.

I suppose the confusion is because duplicate Lemmy communities across instances can haver the same name. Perhaps a solution to this would be to more prominently show the instance name alongside the community name.

I imagine we will get situations in the future where multiple same name communities gain traction, but may have different vibes. If it was easier to tell apart c/foobar on InstanceA from c/foobar on InstanceB on each part of the Lemmy interface it would be less confusing.

All many people care about is bread and circuses. Unless their sustenance and distractions are taken away they are complacent.

In case OP is still with us, my advice would be anti diarrhoea medication, consume minimum liquids, avoid fibre, pack MREs which are often formulated to be a bit constipating. But above all, question why on earth you would be doing this in the first place!
