This was literally me in the first episode seeing the E-wings, having not realized that’s what they were in the initial trailers. My wife, who’s a Star Wars fan but never really got into the old EU like I did, didn’t understand my enthusiasm.
How’s Ahsoka so far?
Only watched the first episode, enjoyed it, excellent acting from an excellent cast, decent ground work for the series. Alright action, lightsabre fights left me a little disappointed.
reminds me of the original trilogy’s fight choreography.
I honestly prefer that. The original trilogy had unfancy battles, but every swing seemed important. They all felt like they could be a killing blow and it made the fights exciting. The prequel fights are too fast. They became strobe light shows and it made them boring because there was nothing to follow.
As I see it, each opponent wields a saber according to their strength, style, and teaching. Several characters in the OT and those approaching or thereafter that timeline carry a light saber more like a heavy 2-handed sword. It was the style at the time, which is why I was wearing an onion on my belt.
how? Did you mean prequels? Even the prequel choreography wasnt this bad
the dart maul fight had an actual martial artist doing fancy moves even though quai gon jinn stood there like in the originals with obi
Seriously, watch the fight at the end of the Phantom Menace. It’s fun but it’s not good.
There’s a lot of times where Obi Wan and Qui Gon take turns attacking, and visibly waste time to avoid attacking simultaneously. There’s a bunch of times where they’re really obviously attacking Maul’s saber, not Maul. Attacks that are obviously out of distance. That sort of thing. Ray Park is a great, award winning martial artist, but Liam Neeson and MacGregor aren’t, and it really shows.
Compare it to the Maul vs Ahsoka fight at the end of Clone Wars. Being able to motion capture two great martial artists makes a big difference vs having to teach an actor fight choreography. It’s still flashy and has some silliness in it, but it looks much better.
How does it compare to the first season of the mandolorian or the last 3 episodes of obi-wan?
For me that’s a hard comparison, the last 3 eps of obiwan I found pretty awesome. Its a better start than obi I would say though. It feels different to mando, less like the og star wars, think there’s more in it off you’ve watched the rebels, all the Clone wars cartoons. Pacing is good… as you can tell I’m not much of a critic. But I’m thinkingI’m going to like it.
Yeah, I’m just deciding if I want to watch it or not, I almost tapped out of obi wan at the beginning, and couldn’t bring myself to watch more than the first episode of the latest mandolorian season. They have been missing lately, but I hope it’s good.
I liked the latest season of Mando it was a pretty good direction forward I feel. Ahsoka has kept up with that pretty well, but the first ep is definitely moving slowly on the wrong things. But episode 2 was really good for the direction
FWIW, it seems that the first episode of most of these SW shows are just trying to get things set up for the things they actually want to write. Mando, BoBF, and Andor seem to be the exception, where BoBF teetered off a bit and Andor stayed strong throughout.
I don’t disagree the shows have had some shortcomings, but overall I’ve actually enjoyed them quite a bit. I do wish they spent a little more time on making the first episodes feel “right” though, as that would help the reception overall quite a bit.
I loved Kenobi even though some people don’t, but I accept the silly sequence of little Force Leia running away from bounty hunter/mercs as just showing Leia’s force attunement. It’s silly but effective since it shows her cunning at a young age.
Interesting, I really enjoyed andor, but Mando really just didn’t do it. I never really liked that show much anyway, can’t wait to watch Ahsoka though! Kenobi was also great which gives me hope.
That’s too bad! S1 was the strongest for me but S2 and S3 have been enjoyable. If the space western style wasn’t selling it for you, they do move on from the motif a little after S1, but I wouldn’t push through it unless you’re interested in Mando and baby Yoda.
Personally what I’ve liked it for, aside from the western style, was how they were being subtle with the world building of the sequels. It’s much more effective just being around cloning facilities that we can assume made Snoke and Palpatines bodies than outright pointing and speaking on it and I was glad it wasn’t heavy handed to just try and “fix” missteps from the sequels.
Your loss, esp mando s3
Hmmm worse then Mando season 1. I wouldnt say its gotten as bad as the last 3 episodes of kenobi.
If mando season 1 is a 4 and kenobi is 2. So far this show being a 3/10 is qbout right
Contrary to what the other person said, my friend and I watched it last night and the first episode left us with more mild disappointment than excited enthusiasm - but we actually loved the second episode and it felt much better for us. Our issues with the first episode weren’t anything major, it was just contrived conflicts for the sake of actually getting to what’s going on. Our two examples were there was a lot of maps and puzzles that feels like they should be part of a video game, and it’s not the kind of puzzles that the audience can really feel like we’re part of, and then some of the character conflicts were a result of unnecessarily withholding information when the characters can just clash and be a natural conflict. Finally, the ending was very funny in retrospect due to a character solving something, going to look outside at the stars, and then later saying they didn’t solve it… so they were just staring in the sky for no reason with binoculars thinking maybe they’ll see it xD
Okay but in all honesty, I still enjoyed and loved the show. I had a feeling that episode one was merely a means to get us moving and ultimately as long as these minor issues don’t keep up with the rest of the show then I’m not worried. Episode two did have a minor video game segment with unnecessary tension but after that the episode was awesome. So far we’re getting at least a little bit of development on the enemies they introduced (may Ray rest in peace) and it’s cool seeing the timeline at this stage in the game. The translation from TCW/R is also done really well, I’d say everybody except for Huyang (a droid) looks freaking incredible. Huyang just looks like a puppet with CG overlaid or something, compared to the rest he’s just a little out of it. However David Tenet does great with him :)
For context, I enjoyed all of BoBF (but definitely do see where it has shortcomings at various stages) and Kenobi as well.
@JimmyChanga per the lightsaber fight in Ep1’s ending - my hope is that the character felt like she was showing off the tricks she learned resulting in her motivation for needing to go back to training. In that context, while not the best saber fight I appreciate it more. I liked Ahsoka’s fights though
It’s alright, a tad slow I guess. I think they’re aiming for an epic feeling to be a buildup to something, but I can’t imagine it living up to it, unless you count fanservice and getting continuation of old stories. Which may totally be enough actually.
With 8 episodes, it’s not much of a risk to watch it. Certainly better than TBoBF, about comparison to Kenobi it remains to be seem yet imo.
Pretty bad. 3 main characters are all stoic planks of wood.
Fight choreography is pretty awful.
Sabine gets stabbed with a lightsaber and surivives no problem.
Like kenobi it seems to be stealing from the jedi fallen order/surivior games again. Its bizarre.
Not sure if its because everything else is terrible but the two villains seem to be the most interesting/engaging.
So yeah pretty much more low quality kenobi level garbage.
Not that I wasn’t doing that
I saw Huyang in the trailers and I was bouncing
I quite enjoyed those first two EPs, but yeah, anyone who’s not steeped in the lore is going to be so lost. This isn’t like Andor when anyone could pick the show up regardless of star wars knowledge.
Pointing out all the many many problems. Yeah thats about right. It seems to be speedt Running its way to be worse then kenobi
