Yeah they are just not good. Same as star wars. I would maybe except the first Iron Man, Logan, and the original trilogy (before Lucas remade them with CGI).
The story telling is lazy, the characters undifferentiated, and there are no real consequences to anything. It’s just obvious money grabbing because media consumers have no taste or ability to distinguish good art from bad. T

Oh 100%. Its that he understands the fundamental thesis of comedy. You have to subvert expectations. And if they expect you to subvert expectations, you have to subvert that too. Whatever you are not supposed to do, thats what you need to do. Its what Kaufman got. Its what all the greats understand. But what separates the GOATS like Norm is that they go there. Even if there is telling the same OJ jokes again and again. Even if its a 1950’s joke book.
You can’t do comedy if you don’t know where “there” is. You can’t be a GOAT if you aren’t the kind of person who can always just “go” there.

I keep rewatching Norm MacDonald Live! on internet archive. Its the best of Norm imo. The Superdave Episode (the real first one, not the fake after the fact, produced one), where Superdave (I think) is literally not in on the joke till the last 20 minutes, it might be one of the funniest pieces of comedy out there.
Norm gets how comedy and jokes work in a way that anyone who isn’t a comedian or isn’t a student of comedy wouldn’t understand.
In the end, Norm was Kaufmans heir. He understood that all comedy is based on subversion, but that even that has to fold in on itself.
Dear god, I read that in Norm’s voice and I’m dying.
There are multiple stories of him going out and bombing on purpose, just for kicks.
I mean if you listen to his live stuff, a solid quarter of it is him bombing intentionally, then just antagonizing the audience. Its like whatever the opposite of crowdwork is.
I just never really got it. It always seemed like a loud room of people sharing their undecorated thoughts with no one in particular.
