Didn’t the storm knock the phone lines out? That’s why Moira didn’t call the house and called the cops to try and get them to do a wellness check.

There has been discussion of using state administered escrow accounts to temporarily hold federal taxes revenue:

I’m calling it “sand on the beach” from now on…

World News@lemmy.world•Cruise passenger, 80, found dead after being abandoned on Great Barrier Reef island - ABC NewsEnglish
151·14 days agoOnly been on one cruise years ago but pretty sure the fine print you agree to says, if your not back on the ship when it’s time to leave port you’re on your own finding your way onward.

World News@lemmy.world•North Korean soldier defects to South Korea across the rivals' heavily fortified borderEnglish
29·25 days agoIn 2017, when a fleeing North Korean soldier sprinted across the border, North Korean soldiers fired about 40 rounds, before South Korean soldiers could drag the wounded soldier to safety.
A vast majority of about 34,000 North Koreans who have fled to South Korea since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War came via China, which shares a long, porous border with North Korea.
So is South Korea’s policy to accept all North Korean defectors?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•People who have permanently moved to another country, what gave you the opportunity and was it worth it?
9·1 month agoWasn’t sure if it was that or a joke that was just going a bit over my head 😂

7·1 month agoMoved from the US to the Netherlands, it’s been great.
Upsides:
Downsides: Decidedly less pay (compared to American amounts, but pretty good by Dutch standards)With all those upsides it’s hard to imagine it not being great…

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•You wake up as a random 10-year-old in 2002 with your memories intact. In your hand is a USB drive with a backup of Wikipedia as of Jan 1 2025. You must keep your identity secret. What do you do?
5·1 month ago10,000 bitcoins were worth ~$20-40 in 2010.
You will need ~500,000,000,000 (500 Billion) bitcoin (unless my math is wrong, but suffice it to say, it’s a lot).
I believe to date only about ~20 million have been mined.

5·1 month agoBitcoin wasn’t invented until 2008 and launched in 2009. Your deadline is 2010. Someone bought 2 pizzas for 10,000 bitcoin in 2010.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do languages that use non-Latin alphabets (Asian, Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew) have upper and lower case letters? What about serif or sans-serif? How do they show emphasis?
30·1 month agoThai does not have upper case letters.
It does have a character that essentially means duplicate the previous word which is a common way to pluralize or emphasize:
Child = เด็ก “dèk”
Children = เด็กเด็ก or เด็กๆ “dèkdèk”Pretty = งาม “ngaam”
Pretty! = งามงาม or งามๆ “ngaamngaam”

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are Combo Convection/Microwave Ovens Legit or a Gimmick?
3·1 month agoOh - a new range is on the horizon, I didn’t realize they had convection/airfry drawers though. I assumed I’d have to spring for one of those fancy split oven options to not have to heat the whole thing up. I’ll definitely keep an eye out. Thanks!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are Combo Convection/Microwave Ovens Legit or a Gimmick?
2·1 month agoYeah - I’ve seen some higher-end “speed oven” versions of the low end “over the range” type I had in mind. At the price they’re asking for the high end ones I’m gonna assume they must work 😅

It’s exactly the same in Thai:
ตู้ “dtuu” - Cupboard
เย็น “yen” - cool
ตู้เย็น “dtuu•yen” - Refrigerator
