I go eat at McDonald’s a lot and almost every time I can hear the staff call out an order number which is ready, but nobody comes to pick it up.

Might be that they ordered online and the food is done before they get there?
Right. And there are totally places that quote bogus pick-up times. If you order enough from there, you learn whether to come early or late lol
