The Earth’s population as we speak is expected to plateau, as the rest of the developing countries are catching up economically and becoming better educated. I don’t see why the galactic population can’t be the same.

It’s about winning an argument. That is Thanos’ entire motivation. He wants to be right and he wants everyone who disagreed with him to be wrong.
