What’s worse is not knowing if it’s going to be (E)ngland, (G)reat Britain or the (U)nited Kingdom. I always scroll to the wrong point on the list first
And then, surprise! It’s a UK company so they artificially put it at the TOP of the alphabetical list, but you didn’t notice it before you scrolled everywhere else first.
Same here, is it going to be (H)olland, (T)he Netherlands or (N)etherlands, with the minor inconvenience of (N)ederland.
Same here, can be (G)ermany or (D)eutschland.
And when the website sucks (looking at you Microsoft), it’s Deutschland, but placed in the list at G.Or (A)llemagne, (N)iemcy, (T)yskland, (S)aksa, (V)asija (you won’t encounter the last two unless you use a website in Finnish or Estonian, however the first three are used in numerous countries including Germany’s neighbors).
The lists are occasionally auto-translated, sometimes I see “🇹🇷 Truthahn”.In my case it’s either (A)ustria, (Ö)sterreich (listed as O), or (Ö)sterreich (listed after Z)
Similarly, sometimes forms use foreign countries’ English names, and sometimes the native names. Pretty annoying as a German.
And a special “screw you” to any UI devs that don’t use the native behavior when typing letters while focused on a select field.
Plot Twist: The site designer is Chinese and its now (Y)英国 [YingGuo/England]
Or (B)ritain? Once I even found (T)he UK, which I only discovered by searching the page source.
Most forms will let you type the letters to jump in the list. You’re welcome!
Some don’t. And the devs that implement those should be publicly shamed in pillories.
Worst thing is that that usually cost more effort.
Yup. I just press D and up to get to Czech Republic every time.
Congratulations, you triggered a filter search…

⋮This happens so often I instinctively press ⌫, C, Z when I see this specific list.
That’s straight up evil
I love it
On a computer, that’s easy. On a phone, not so much, especially if the field lacks anything that will bring up the keyboard
Scrolling through 200 items is easier on a phone than a desktop without PgUp/PgDn.
I hate it more when the US is added as a privileged spot at the top.
I mean i’ve implemented where it shows the current country’s connection at the top. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
This guy intl’s
If we put California at the top on the state selectors some people would flip their shit. Same thing.
I mean, most of the time when I see a country at the top, it’s based on your IP.
TFW you’re australian so you type “AUST” and hit enter but all of a sudden you’re wearing lederhosen and yodeling at some mountains.
I imagine the Australian embassy in Vienna already has forms to handle the situation, and so does the Austrian one in Canberra.
Zimbabwe has the advantage of being at the bottom of the list, so you just scroll all the way down and click.
It’s the same advantage as having a Volvo.
but what if I’ve imported a Ukranian ZAZ?
Then you wouldn’t be shopping for parts, you’d be shopping for a junk removal service
Americuh’ should be no1 on the list! (None of the other countries on the continent matter.)
America, United States of (also known as the AUS).
Those annoy me more because I often instantly scroll to the bottom and miss that its in the wrong spot.
Cheer up, it will be the Divided States soon enough, closer to the top!
Soon they will be scrolling for (W)estern Alliance
I don’t think I saw this mentioned but you’re are all aware that you can press “U” and it will select United States, right ?
United Kingdom
Do you know what the worst thing about being from Antarctica is? Those country lists rarely include it. Penguins should invade and conquer the world, for the greatness of the Penguin Country.🐧🇦🇶
Really I’m just happy to be at an end. Nigerians have it rough there.
At least Zimbabwe knows they can always scroll to the bottom
I’m in Finland and it’s always mildly weird when these country lists have “Aland Islands” right in the top. I’m not entirely sure in which circumstances the folks from Åland even pick that option. But, I mean, it’s an autonomous region, they do have the right to mildly confuse the people who collect user statistics.
(There was also that one incident when some Google product wasn’t available in EU as a whole due to regulations that had to be sorted out, but it was somehow available in Åland because Google did an oopsie.)
Also some places have option “Finland” and some have “Suomi” and it should never be “Suomi” unless it’s a Finnish site IMO.
Also some sites ask for email addresses.
I give them my .fi address.
The sites then go “did you mean .fr?”
And I’m like “No actually I’m in Finland. It’s a whole different country. Don’t get me wrong, I love the French, great country. I love our EU brothers and sisters and enbypals. Just don’t buy a nuclear reactor from them.”
Of course a lot of these, particularly this with nearly or entirely US users, just put the US at the top. Which is smart. I’d expect shit based on other countries to do likewise, especially non-English sites.
It’s smart until I instinctually scroll to the U section only to not find United States
It should be America, United States
Mexico, United States
